Many of us have rooted Droids. 2.1 ROMs were originally ported over from the Nexus 1, but bases (such as ESE 53) have been leaked and built upon that. Most of that is probably over your head, as it was over mine just 3 months ago.

'Tis a fact. 2.1 was integrated into ROMs (custom operating systems for the Droid) well over a month ago. Installing a ROM isn't as easy as installing an app, but it's far from impossible... and well worth the effort, IMHO.
