Using a droid without a data plan...Verizon.

I bought a used verizon droid encrideble hoping I could use it only for talk and text due to my current plan. Verizon said the phone cannot be used or activated without a data plan. Can I get around this or use the phone to access the web through my home wireless provider, essentially using it as a really small tablet to do facebook stuff.
