Do Kinetico Water Systems require Service after 12 yrs?

Our Quad Carbon 50 system is from '98 and is sending a salty taste pretty often thru the taps. I note a slight 'drip' (and white salty residue when it dries) on the tank. Is this normal, or something to be looked into? I called them, and was told there is a hefty fee to come look at it. Also, that this system is good for life. Hmmm.
What do you suggest?
