jonny gomes came thru again last night -- walkoff dinger to lead off the 9th...
Quote:
Gomes admitted he may have already outdone himself when it comes to celebratory saunters from
third to home, having punted his helmet after his first walk-off homer on June 18. On his way home
this time, Gomes made like he was going to boot his helmet again but instead tucked it under his arm
and bulled his way into the awaiting pig pile, as if he were going for it on fourth-and-1.

@Region Philbis,
What a happy contrast to last year, huh?

Wonder if Jonny Gomes fields well?

{Edit: I just looked him in the baseball abstract. He's a so-so outfielder (p/t much of his career with 3 teams) but her doesn't make a lot of errors.}

Sox take Aceves off 40-man roster

The Red Sox announced in a text message Sunday night after the team had left on its flight home
that pitcher Alfredo Aceves had been outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket, which means that he was
placed on waivers and went unclaimed by 29 other major-league teams.

It also means that Aceves is off the team’s 40-man roster and is unlikely to pitch for the Red Sox again.

The move follows Aceves’s brief appearance on the team's just-concluded road trip, in which he pitched
just two-thirds of an inning Tuesday in Seattle in relief of Allen Webster in the third inning, then did not
come out for the fourth. Afterward, manager John Farrell said he wanted to get a left-hander in the game,
sending Craig Breslow to the mound, but that explanation made little sense then and even less now.

Clearly, something took place that did not sit well with the organization because Aceves was optioned back
to Pawtucket the next day.

@Region Philbis,
"The news came via Twitter at 9:47 p.m. on Sunday night. “RHP Alfredo Aceves has been outrighted to Triple A Pawtucket.”

That was it. No press release, no explanation. Just a sentence.

Of course there is more to it than that. Being outrighted means Aceves was passed through waivers and taken off the 40-man roster. Every team passed on him.

The Red Sox could bring him back any time. But this is a sign they aren’t much interested in doing that. He was expendable and now they have a roster spot they can use on somebody else.

You know the story with Aceves. He has pitched pretty well in his career (30-14, 3.69 in 194 games for the Yankees and Red Sox), but never really fit in. The Yankees cut him loose after the 2010 season, feeling he was unreliable.

The Red Sox picked him up and Aceves pitched very well in 2011. It has been a mess since. Aceves bickered with Bobby Valentine last season, to the point of suspension. He also challenged John Farrell’s authority in spring training, earning a lecture. Catchers complained about how he shook off their calls and other teammates look askance at his odd behavior.

(Odd as in quirky. Aceves once made a bed out of towels in spring training and tried to sleep on the floor in front of his locker.)

The Sox shipped him to the minors then brought him back for a series of spot starts that went well. But Aceves still operated outside the margins. He showed up when he felt like it, even before starts, and was difficult to communicate with.

Something seemed to have happened in Seattle on Tuesday that was the last straw. Aceves threw 13 pitches in relief of Allen Webster in the third inning and didn’t come out for the fourth.

Farrell said the pitcher wasn’t hurt, but Aceves claimed he was to at least one reporter. It also was clear that Craig Breslow was rushed into that game to replace him."

@Region Philbis,
I got a feeling Senor Aceves was a bit troubled whilst on yon Yanquis, too. not that Bobby V. had the gentlest touch, the bugger.

@Ragman,

makes you wonder how m rivera has managed to pitch for 18 years without a major upper-body injury...

what is he doing right?
is it just dumb luck?

@Region Philbis,
I think partly he's got the luck of the draw - good genes. The other part is that he's in such great shape.

Another thought ... somewhat unrelatedly ... is that he pretty much throws the same pitch...but he has the fortune of being able to deliver it in a very repeatable fashion. The rhythm and balance seems to have working towards producing very few injuries. I think his injury that took him out this last year was due to a fielding play, wasn't it?

@Region Philbis,
Whereas, who's that new phenom on Wash Nats? ummm... oh yes, Strasburg.

He has that unbalanced delivery and suffered that injury where he needed Tommy John surgery in his first or 2nd year.

@panzade,
It sure looks it. What a 180-degree-change from last year. Big Papi, Napoli and Gomes are a big part of their success, but Farrell is the major dude, IMHO.

I wish they had a better defensive catcher and one more quality starter and a star reliever, though. I hear the trade rumors have it that Jake Peavey (CWS) is a leading candidate being considered by Red Sawx. He'd fit right in.

I'd love to see them move far into the playoffs. Make all those talking heads eat crow.
