Bobby V will be taking the helm...

Quote:
Source: Valentine gets Red Sox job

Bobby Valentine, an analyst for ESPN, will be the next manager of the Boston Red Sox,
a source close to the team said Tuesday night.

Valentine was offered the job Tuesday and accepted it. Valentine, who appeared at a
charity event in Japan on Monday, is scheduled to fly back home at midnight ET Wednesday.

Earlier Tuesday, a source told ESPN that Gene Lamont, the other finalist for the job,
was no longer a candidate.

@Region Philbis,
Based on interviews I've seen with Buckner, he expressed no interest in being in Boston on Red Sawx...even on a bet.

I applaud the Beantown Boys getting Bobby V as mgr. The media must be orgasming. The amount of fodder he'll be giving them directly or indirectly will be amazing.

He's a good-sometimes-great-manager. However, if the team should fail to make it into the playoffs or go one-round-and-done for 2 straight years - then it could get ugly.

I wish I was a sports-writer-tv-common-tater in Boston for the last few and next few years. In Boston, these are the writers' glory days. Broonz are winners of Stanley Cup and a contender this year, Pats are perennial playoff and SB winner, Red Sox whether they're in win or lose scenario are good copy and then there's the Celts and their winning ways. Nice work if you can get it.

@Ragman,

it's possible he's on a short (2-year) leash, keeping the seat warm for john farrell...

@Region Philbis,
Who? Bobby V?

Incidentally, I read some rumors that certain Sawx players are NOT happy with the choice of managers. They were against it..vocally.

This article about Buckner is interesting. Shows how out of touch I am since leaving Boston in 1999:

"Forgiveness

Buckner returned to the Red Sox in 1990 as a free agent, and received a standing ovation from the crowd during player introductions at the home opener on April 9. His return was short lived, as he retired on June 5 with a .186 batting average, one home run and three RBIs. However, that one home run was an inside-the-park roundtripper that Buckner hit on April 25, 1990, off California Angels pitcher Kirk McCaskill. It was the only inside-the-park home run of his career.

On April 8, 2008, Buckner threw out the first pitch to former teammate Dwight Evans at the Red Sox home opener as they unfurled their 2007 World Series championship banner. He received a four minute standing ovation from the sell-out crowd. After the game, when asked if he had any second thoughts about appearing at the game, he said, "I really had to forgive, not the fans of Boston, per se, but I would have to say in my heart I had to forgive the media for what they put me and my family through. So, you know, I've done that and I'm over that."
