how do I keep the drain hose to my water softener from freezing

We use a salt based water softener system and have difficulty being able to run it during the winter since the drain hose will freeze and backup into our basement. The water is so hard it is awful not to be able to use it all winter. Any suggestions as to how to keep the drain hose from freezing?
