There's no goddam SWEEPING in Bocci!!!

There's no ice in Bacci either.

Accept there is an inordinate amount of yelling at the stone thingy and a tad much more sweeping in curling, and Bocci is actually fun to play.

Sorry! I just can't get over the sweeping part of the game.

There have been scientific studies about the sweeping.

mebbe not so much in with a shot now - ha. Shame.

I've not seen bocce being played, at least that I remember, but I almost named Pacco bocce until I found out it was a feminine noun. What I do know is that more an more bocce courts are being built here in the US, or at least they were being built in california when I lived there.

Isn't that like saying a bunch of vegans got dusted off by a group of professional German competitive eaters in a bratwursts eating contest?

My buddy and I were talking about it. He said if a pregnant woman can play (which was what he said was happening) it doesn't count as a sport.

Then we heard that they have time outs ("they just called their second time out, and only have one left!") and I lost it. I couldn't stop laughing. This looks like a cool bar game, like shuffleboard, but as an Olympic sport it's a joke to me.

"Canada has called a time out to put in their last substitution!"

"Bold move, let's see how that works out for them!"

(then the announcer does the Xs and Os...)

To celebrate...we played a miniature indoor version at the bar last night...using cocktail napkins to "sweep"

Let's wait and see for the US to create the NCA league! The National Curling Association!

Oh, and no insult meant to anyone who likes or does curling. I think it looks like great fun myself, but more of a game than a sport IMO.

Anyhow, if nobody swept, there's be no advantage, right?

I guess it keeps them moving, and does something for that tension as you wonder whether your damn oven is going to go where you want.

Sweeping changes the characteristics of the ice and causes the path of the stone to curl slightly. The amount the stone is deflected from its linear path is a function of the speed of the stone along with the characteristics of the ice. For example, if a stone is thrown very fast, then it will curl very little, and visa versa.

Curling without sweeping would be like billiards without putting english on the ball.

If I remember right, the curve of the stone was though to be based on the difference between the spin at the leading edge and the spin on the tailing edge. The scientific jury was still out (according to what I read) about the significance of sweeping (or whether it does anything for the speed or direction of the stone). There was some theory about it melting the ice and causing a smoother slipping on a film of liquid water. But, speculating scientists think this doesn't make a difference.

I'm thinking I've had a massive stroke and a hip replacement but I could probably make the USA curling team maybe even get a medal.
