Do you know the answer to this riddle?

Tom likes indigo but not blue, he likes onions but not turnips, he likes forms but not shapes. Using this same logic does he like tomatoes or avacados?

Any help is greatly appreciated Rolling Eyes

Hmmmmm.

If it weren't for that pesky "forms" I would be able to say the answer was "avacados" since it would appear he likes things that start with vowels.

Are you sure it's not "areas" that he likes?

Normally, these kinds of puzzles have several possible solutions. If a solution is given that shows a logical answer -- but is not the answer the poser has in mind, he/she can correct by posting another pairing.

I think tomatoes is correct.

Rather than give my reasoning -- I'll give another pairing that contains what I have in mind.

Correct me if it is wrong.

Tom likes irises -- but not roses.

If I'm wrong -- I'll explain my reasoning. If I'm correct, I'll save the reasoning so others can try to solve.

Well, as written, I would go with avocado. Indigo a different, more complex shade of blue. Onions, multi-layered, complex, unlike the simple turnip. Forms, nebulous, intellectual, vs. simple shapes. Avocado clearly the more interesting and creative choice over a tomato. I always over-think these things, but hey, who knows?

I like your way of thinking, Cav.

Frank also had a nice answer.

And because I'm not a prick, I'll also congratulate boomerang on her insight.

Myself, I'm still thinking.

MY REASONING:

Indigo, onions, forms -- and my addition, irises -- all contain two letter words in them.

Indigo has "in" and "go" -- onions has "on" twice -- forms has "or" -- irises has "is."

Blue, Turnips, shapes -- and my addition roses -- contain no two letter words.

Like I said -- this may not be the response you were looking for.

If it isn't correct -- why not post something Tom doesn't like -- that contains a two letter word.

Frank your explanation might be on the right track but it might need a bit of a tweak. Shapes has a two letter word "ha"

tomatoes has "to" avocados has "do" ? Confused

I discounted "ha" as a non-word -- but I completely missed "do" in avocados.

My solution is wrong.

Thanks.

I'll think on it some more.

If you use the botanical definition of "form" (denoting difference within a species, usually color) ...

Idigo is a dye made from plants
Onion skins are used as a dye
Avocado skins are used as a dye too!

No, sorry.

The answer concerns word play, not the meaning of the words.

Tom likes all things that start with a preposition (in, on, for). Therefore, he must like tomatoes (to).

At first I'd have thought he'd like hobos and not bums, but I think now that he preferres tomboys to brunettes.
