What's the big deal about Barbra Streisand?

Ok, with the recent appearance in the news I realized (again) that this is a mega celebrity that I don't get. I know she's probably talented, and that a lot of people love her but I don't think I can name a single one of her songs.

Any fans out there or people who can turn me on to what makes her so popular? I doubt I'll become a fan myself just because it doesn't seem my style and I'm picky with music, but I'd like to better understand what her draw is, so if you could explain it and/or recommend some arch-typical songs she'd recorded I'd appreciate it.

I like several of her songs, particularly, My Heart Belongs to Me. I can't watch her act, however.

Same as Edgar, I like some of her songs, especially By the way, but I have mixed feelings about her acting and her demeanor in life..

@Robert Gentel,
I don't have a personal opinion about her -- she didn't make enough of an impact before I became deaf, though I did hear her at least a few times -- but I thought this article was interesting.

It made me go "Oh, OK, that's why some people are crazy about her."

Git adda here!

Ms Streisand has a set of the finest pipes known to man, and has a great technique and a fine way with a ballad. Also comedy.

Okay she's a bit over-the-top at times, but she's Jewish. Or so they say.

Here's a helpful analysis:

Make sure to listen through the whole thing... after he talks about things he loves about Streisand, he gets into things he doesn't like, and it's a hoot.

Sometimes she's good and sometimes not so good, but I love her doing this one.

Reminds me of Billie Holiday.

@Robert Gentel,
She has a fantastic voice, a dynamite delivery and isn't too shabby an actress. And, to her credit, imo, never bothered to let a plastic surgeon fix her nose. What's not to like?

@Merry Andrew,
Her nose is like a cathedral, so her acoustics are magnificent.

She's 67 years old, and beyond her prime. As a young woman, she was a dynamite singer and actress. When she was young, she was bold and brassy, and made herself known to her audience. She has a magnificent voice, and a very engaging personality.

I think that those people who grew up with her, and watched her develop, have a greater appreciation for her, than those who have only recently heard her songs.

Here is the stuff that she sung. I would suppose Robert, that you may very well recognize many of them.

BTW, for whatever it's worth, Mr. P. hates her.....................thinks that she is a bitch!

@sozobe,
That does help, might be a bit more nuanced than I have an ear to appreciate but I figured she was pretty talented.

Anyone know if she composes any good stuff or is she just a beautiful voice?

I'm going to check out her Smoke Gets in Your Eyes rendition that the article mentions, that's a song I like so it might be a good way to evaluate her.

Ain't nothing wrong with that lady's nose, it's merely extra expressive. But yes, I do like that about her. She didn't turn it into another of those skeletal plastic jobs like Michael Jackson's.

@Robert Gentel,
I like the quality/texture of her voice. It's a rich instrument.

I haven't liked her "big" music much, though some of the belting she did in Funny Girl was classic New York/Broadway. I've liked some of her smaller/quieter recordings.

I always appreciate that she enunciates - that I can understand the words. That might have something to do with how I learned English - music played a big part.

Not a huge fan of the song itself, but I get what you mean, she's got much more Jazz than I expected, and I think I may just actually end up liking her. Got to find some standards I like that she covers.

A lot of people seem to think so, South Park riffed on it. Cartman says "she's being a total bitch!"
