Very interesting .

From wiki -
Quote:
Some species of ants "farm" aphids, protecting them on the plants they eat, eating the honeydew that the aphids release from the terminations of their alimentary canals. This is a "mutualistic relationship".

These "dairying ants" "milk" the aphids by stroking them with their antennae.[12][13] Therefore, sometimes aphids are called "ant cows".

Some farming ant species gather and store the aphid eggs in their nests over the winter. In the spring, the ants carry the newly-hatched aphids back to the plants.

Marigolds are a waste of time and I always manage to kill them. That's a plant I just can't grow or keep alive. And as for manure, I always use mushroom. Poop can attract flies. Good luck and take some pics. We're still not in the growing season where we are - boo hoo. I plan on growing indigenous plants if and when the sun ever comes out. I'm jealous! Vancouver has such perfect gardening conditions.

Well.

Solved my ant problem.

I found two large storage bins at goodwill for 99 cents each
(easily 15.00+ at any regular store)

Put the pots in them and soaked them with water.
The water levels were above the soil levels and I let them sit in the water for an entire day, maybe two... drowning the ants Smile

Took them out, Set them in the direct sun to dry out.

Voila. No more ants.

So now that I have removed all bugs, I have FOOOOOD growing Very Happy

I have a new eggplant that has now started.
Before the plant was always healthy appearing, thick and quite beautiful.
But the flowers were being sucked dry by aphids.
No more. Smile

I think, out of everything I am growing , the eggplant PLANT is the most beautiful thing I have.

Even my boston fern is thriving and doing wonderfully.

I have 4 yellow squash, 6 broccoli heads, and a butter lettuce.
The baby butter lettuce leaves taste SOO good. I dont think it will make it to maturity Wink
6 green bell peppers which is disappointing. This was supposed to be an orange bell pepper plant. Im not a big fan of green at all. But, I can trade them .

anyway.
My patio is rocking now Smile

yes they do. And they begin to change colors WAY before they are this big.
These are ready to eat , not still growing..

so, when do they turn color?

should I pluck them first?
Do they ripe after being harvested? Because these peppers need to be pulled in the next day or so..

I had another bell pepper last year whos color changed from green to the red/orange when they were ready to be plucked. Different variety maybe.
I assumed they all did that

bell peppers change colour as they mature. They can readily be eaten when they are green. they can also readily be eaten when they change colour.
Some bell peppers change colour to red, some to yellow, some go an orange color.

Green bell peppers can be eaten whilst they are quite small.

Colour change can be related to heat, humididty and amount of sunlight. if insufficiant sunlight is being recieved they may not change colour.
Too much and or inconsistent watering can cause fruit to develop brown spots which will quickly rot.

I am about to throw a damn tantrum.

Soaked my plants in water . For 2 DAYS!
No ant can survive being in water that long can they?

Well they did. And they are back. And so are the aphids.
I have not found the safer brand of spray yet. I gave in and bought something from the grocery store. Used it a few times.....those damn bugs are still there.

Confused
