Famous musical addresses

Reply Thu 23 Apr, 2009 10:35 pm
I was sitting in the refectory today and Crowded House's 'Weather with you' came on and the line '57 Mount Pleasant Street' made me think about all the musical addresses there must be and whether people knew stories about them, or had visited them. So do you know any or have stories about them?

e.g. 'Down the end of Lonely Street' from Elvis Presley's 'Heartbreak Hotel' is supposedly a direct lift from a teenager's suicide note published in the New York Times (I haven't checked the veracity of that story).

I thought 57 Mt Pleasant street was a share house in Melbourne that Neil Finn visited - not sure on that one either.

And Frente's 'Accidentally Kelly Street' is also a mystery to me.

And what is at Clapton's 461 Ocean Boulevarde?

Can't think of an address at the moment. How about a phone number: Pennsylvania 6-5000.

I'm gonna be standing on the corner
On the corner of Twelfth Street and Vine
With my Kansas City baby
And a bottle of Kansas City wine.

Been there. 12th street was jazz central in K.C. There's a park there now.

Somebody Glenn Miller knew. Before my time.

I don't know the address, but this is a picture I took of the "House of the Rising Sun" in New Orleans. It's just off Bourbon street and is now a real estate office.

The west hills mentioned in Everclear's "I Will Buy You A New Life" refer to the area of Portland, Oregon where the super rich live.

I will buy you that big house way up in the west hills.

@hingehead,
Down by the river
down by the banks of the River Charles
that's where you'll find me
along with lovers, fuggers and thieves

-- "Dirty Water" - The Standells

That's Boston, probably somewhere between the Fens and the old Combat Zone.

Not one address, but thousands of miles of road!

Quote:
Well if you ever plan to motor west,
Just take my way , that's the highway that's the best.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

Well it winds from Chicago to LA
More than two-thousand miles all the way.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

Well it goes through St. Louie down to Missouri
Oklahoma City looks oh so pretty.
You'll see Amarillo, Gallup, New Mexico
Flagstaff, Arizona, don't forget Winona,
Kingsman, Barstow, San Bernardino.

Won't you get hip to this timely tip
And think you'll take that California trip.
Get your kicks on route sixty-six.

tom waits songs are a road map of the american, um, dream?

'hey charlie i'm pregnant
and living on the 9th street
right above a dirty bookstore
off euclid avenue'

"I heard he has an ex-wife in someplace called Mayor's Income, Tennessee.
And he used to have a consulting business in Indonesia."

"see that little jersey girl in the see-through top,
with the peddle pushers sucking on a soda pop,
well i bet she's still a virgin
but it's only twenty-five 'til nine,
you can see a million of 'em
on heartattack and vine."

"and deal the cards roll the dice
if it ain't that ole Chuck E. Weiss
and Clayborn Avenue me and you
Sam Jones and all
and I wish I was in New Orleans
I can see it in my dreams
arm-in-arm down Burgundy
a bottle and my friends and me
New Orleans, I'll be there"

Again, not an address, but a definite place.

Quote:
It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay
And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat
And Mama hollered out the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet"
And then she said "I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge"
"Today Billy Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

Tell all the gang at Forty Second Street

Give my regards to Old Broadway
And say that I'll be there e'er long.

@Ticomaya,
Hey, Tico. I sang that but I always knew it as 42nd Street and Vine.

Have you ever passed the corner of 4th and Grand
Where a little ball of rhythm has a shoeshine stand
People gather round and they clap their hands he's a great big bundle of joy
He pops a boogie woogie rag the Chattanooga shoeshine boy
