I have narrowed down to 3 tvs now. 1. panasonic 42'' class 720p plasma hdtv for 799.99 at best buy. 2. vizio 42'' class plasma 720p for 700.00 at walmart. 3. vizio 42'' class lcd 1080p for 799.99 at walmart. I will be playing a playstation 3 and watching movies mostly on it. I have been looking for a 42'' tv and 800.00 is my limit. I was wondering what tv you feel is better. also is there a better tv anywhere i can get for the same money? what tv is right for me?

I imagine that its probably:
" 3. vizio 42'' class lcd 1080p for 799.99 at walmart "
but I don 't recognize that brand. Maybe check it with Consumer Reports or Google it.

U shoud get as many pixels as u can for the clearest High Definition picture.
Samsung, Sony, Pioneer, and Panasonic have good reputations.

@sparrowcloud,
On resolution: Your PS3 can broadcast at 1080p. The 720p picture will look fine, but you really won't be taking full advantage of the PS3 for game playing or blu-ray since it has a player built into it.

On supplier: Vizio is a decent, second tier supplier and they get fair to good marks from Consumer Reports. I don't see a reason to steer away from them since you aren't going to get a better brand at your price point.

On type: LCD uses less electricity (by a fair amount) than plasma. Most modern LCD tv's have resolved the issue with watching the TV from the side, but find one in the Wal Mart and look at it from a 45 degree angle. Make sure all the colors look right. Plasma is brighter and is subject to burn-in. If you leave your game on the splash screen and walk away, you might have a problem.

Given what you've written and your intended usage, I suggest the 1080p, LCD model. You will also want to buy an inexpensive HDMI cable (try newegg.com) to connect your PS3 to the TV. You can't transmit 1080p over anything else and store HDMI cables are insanely overpriced. Make sure the Vizio has HDMI inputs, although I'm sure it does on modern tv's.

Depending on your TV signal, you will need to have the right type of tuner to receive digital signals. Much of the "free" HD content you get on cable without paying extra for it comes in QAM format. If the TV has a QAM tuner as well as the standard HD tuner, that's a plus. If you are getting cable into a cable box, you might want another HDMI cable depending on your setup. If you are using an antenna, the standard analog and digital tuners in the TV should be fine.

@engineer,
Looked up the TV on the Wal Mart site and the Vizio's not a bad deal. Just remember that by the time you add tax and cables, you are looking at another $100. You might want to consider the 37" model at around $550 with 1080i resolution and QAM capability. For a 42" TV, you should sitting no closer than 10.5 ft. That's far away for gaming and requires a somewhat deep room to put it in. A 37" TV would be fine from 9' to 18' viewing distance.

@sparrowcloud,
Don't buy the Vizio -- notorious for failure of the main board, which they will replace the TV, but one year and one day after the warranty, boom -- the main frame gives out. The Panasonic is the best buy.

A 42" TV viewed at the correct distance will not show any discernable picture improvement from 1080i to 1080p on nearly all games, broadcast and DVD's. Some digitally shot in 1080p video will look slightly better.

It is true that plasma requires more energy, so you have to weigh that with the improved depth of the blacks, the contrast and the viewing angle. Whether or not you can actually notice the difference unless you get into the 50" and larger screens is debatable.

@Lightwizard,
Vizio also has a problem with uniformity of color across the screen -
