The correct notation would be: Raf1

I meant that it shouldn't have a dash, I hadn't paid attention to what file he had wanted. I think it didn't work for him because of a dash, but he said he tried without. In any case, I think we can make the move work, which is what I really care about.

@Robert Gentel,
Yes, there never is a dash in algebraic notation, but it never consists of more that 4 characters as well.

You can also get a situation where you could have 2 knights, both on different ranks, which could move to the same square.

For example, with two knights on g5 and g1, the moves are N5f3 or N1f3.

@Reyn,
Ah, now I think I see what you mean. Are you saying the correct notation is (Piece) (rank OR file) (rank)(file)? And there isn't supposed to be an "x" to denote capture?

Sorry, I should have clarified, my bad. I meant to say that when one moves normally, it's no more than 4 characters.

Of course, when one makes a capture, it does add on a 5th character, like this:
N5xf3, or Nxf3, if there isn't another knight that can make the same capture. Of course, if that move resulted in a check, there could potentially be a 6th character: N5xf3+

In the previous examples where one extra character is added, it's only used to avoid ambiguity.

There's good explanation on chess notation HERE.

I agree, and I usually make my stupid mistakes in the midgame.
