The difference between two numbers is 3.2. The sum of the numbers is 46.4. What could the two numbers be?

@Primotivo,
x - y = 3.2

x + y = 46.4

add the equations

(x - y) + (x + y) = 49.6

therefore 2x - y + y = 49.6

x = 24.8
so y = 21.6

@Primotivo,
x - y =3.2
x + y = 46.4
-------------------
2x + 0y = 49.6

thus x =24.8

24.8 + y = 46.4
y = 46.4 - 24.8
y = 21.6

Make the two unknown number x and y...

x - y = 3.2
x + y = 46.4

Then simplify one of the two equations and insert it into the other equation... and keep going.

@Primotivo,
I'll demonstate the process, assuming that "showing your work" is required:

****************************************************
Let's call the numbers x & y
then:
1) x - y = 3.2
2)x + y = 46.4

Solve the simultaneous equation (cancelling the "y's"):

x + x = 46.4 - 3.2
2x = 43.2
x = 21.6

Substituting 21.6 for x in 2) above:

21.6 + y = 46.4
y = 46.4 - 21.6
y = 24.8

Solution: x = 21.6; y = 24.8

*************************************************************

@Primotivo,
Each mathematical operation can undo the other . . .: i.e. Addition undo Subtraction: Substraction undo Addition: . . . Multiplication undo Division: . . . Division undo Multiplication.
