@Butrflynet,
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA (KABC) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 struck 17 miles west of Petrolia in Northern California on Wednesday.

The quake hit shortly after 1 p.m. about 25 miles southwest of Ferndale and 41 miles southwest of Eureka, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Ferndale City Manager Jay Parrish told ABC News that he felt a lengthy rolling motion when the quake struck. After the rolling stopped, he walked down Main Street and saw no damage and heard no reports of injuries.

The temblor had a depth of about 10.6 miles.

Residents as far away as Chico reported feeling the quake.

@Butrflynet,
EUREKA – (INT) – A moderately strong M5.7 off-shore earthquake was felt Wednesday afternoon across a wide area of Northern California.

It’s epicenter was about 13-miles from Punta Gorda or about 41 miles southwest of Eureka in the Pacific Ocean.

No significant damage has been reported.

It occurred in the same under-sea area when an M6.9 quake occurred last March.

USGS geologist Brian Atwater has studied the epicenters.

“It’s what we call a ‘triple junction’ because it brings together three tectonic plates. It’s a very busy place in terms of earthquake activity.”

It’s the northern terminus of the San Andreas Fault.

Too numerous to list details. Let's just say there have been several dozen over 4.0 in the last 24 hours.

St. Paul area hit with slew of higher magnitude earthquakes in last 48 hours

Anchorage - The St. Paul region in the Pribilof Islands have been receiving some high activity of higher magnitude earthquakes in the last 48 hours, officials say.

"We have seen five higher magnitude earthquakes (above 4.5 ML) in that region since Friday afternoon," said Paul Huang, of the National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer.

The first of the higher magnitude earthquakes took place Friday around 4:39 p.m. with a magnitude of about 4.09 ML according to the Alaska Earthquake Center.

Two more higher magnitude earthquakes followed on Saturday morning, within 10 minutes of each other. The first earthquake took place at around 8:39 a.m. with a magnitude of about 5.05 ML. This was followed closely by a second one at 8:49 a.m. with a magnitude of about 4.52 ML.

Later that morning, the area received its fourth strong earthquake at about 11:47 a.m. with a magnitude of about 4.83 ML.

The fifth and sixth earthquakes in the region took place Sunday morning. The first earthquake on Sunday took place at about 2:20 a.m. with a magnitude of 4.89 ML. The next earthquake, which is the most recent one felt in the area, took place at 8:40 a.m. with a magnitude of about 5.05 ML.

"It is interesting because this area is not historically prone to higher magnitude earthquakes," said Huang. "The last big earthquake we had in that region was a 6.7 ML earthquake in 1991."

There have also been several lower magnitude earthquakes with a magnitude of less than 4.5 ML.

Officials and residents alike are worried about the sudden frequency of earthquakes.

"I felt one this morning. The whole house was rumbling like the dryer was on. But it wasn't the dryer." said Andrew Fratis, a resident of St. Paul Island.

"There isn't a tsunami warning because the waters are shallow in that region," said Huang. "But we are keeping an eye out."

This is all located an assessed by a seismic indicator, nothing else. Activity can't be seen under the ground, nor can the source or under ground structure be determined.

@Butrflynet,
note: VILLARICA, a "Stromboli type" volcano of the Chilean Andes, has erupted . Its required the evac of over 5000 people who lived along it flanks. Its a combination ndesitic/basaltic lava generator, so it can keep a quiet lava lake but can still eject large pyroclastic chunks.

@Butrflynet,
I have a bet that, in my life, the Andesitic volcano in the "Avenue of Volcnoes" (CHIMBORAZO) will erupt. I made a bet with an old prof who stated that its for all purposes, extinct, but I feel that, with tectonics being what it is, .
Its for a beer so, even if I lose, what the hell. This prof was just about 5 years older than me so he is still kicking.

A major earthquake with a magnitude 7.5 struck off Papua New Guinea and a tsunami warning was issued soon after.
The epicentre of Monday morning's quake was near the town of Rabaul in the northeast of Papua New Guinea, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. The monitor initally reported a 7.7 magnitude earthquake but later downgraded it to 7.5.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said "hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 1,000 km of the earthquake epicentre along the coasts of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands".
The powerful quake struck at a depth of 40km and was followed by two further offshore earthquakes in the vicinity which measured 5.7 and 5.0 respectively.
Mika Tuvi, from the Rabaul Hotel, told Al Jazeera that she and other staff members ran outside when the quake started - in case the building collapsed.
"The earthquake shook for about five minutes," she said, adding that she was not aware of any damage at the hotel or elsewhere.
Staff have since gone back to work, she said, adding that no guests had been at the hotel at the time of the quake.
Officials in the capital, Port Moresby, were working to contact their counterparts in the outer provinces, but there had been no reports of damage or injuries within an hour of the quake rattling the country.
Martin Mose, acting director for Papua New Guinea's National Disaster Center, told the Associated Press news agency that no one had reported seeing any tsunami waves.

"The situation seems to be under control at this stage," he said.

@Butrflynet,
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/tsunami-warning-issued-parts-pacific-earthquake-29995136

A powerful earthquake rattled the South Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea on Monday, generating a small tsunami and frightening locals near the epicenter, but prompting no reports of damage or injuries.

A tsunami of half a meter (1.5 feet) was measured in the harbor of Rabaul, a town near the epicenter of the magnitude-7.7 earthquake, said Martin Mose, acting director for Papua New Guinea's National Disaster Center. The quake struck at a depth of 65 kilometers (40 miles), about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of the town of Kokopo, near Rabaul, in northeastern Papua New Guinea, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had warned that tsunami waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) could strike parts of Papua New Guinea, and waves of less than 0.3 meters (1 foot) could hit other Pacific countries, as far north as Russia. The center lifted the warning a few hours later, after reporting a 3-centimeter (1-inch) tsunami wave was measured at a wharf in the Solomon Islands, about 450 kilometers (280 miles) from the epicenter.

In Rabaul, residents noticed the sea level rose slightly, prompting ocean water to flood the parking lot of a shopping center near the beach, said Mika Tuvi, an employee at the Rabaul Hotel. "But nothing beyond that — no damage caused," she said.

When the quake struck, guests and workers at the hotel fled outside, fearing the building would collapse, Tuvi said. The tremors, which lasted for about 5 minutes, were frightening in their intensity, but the hotel withstood the shaking, she said.

Officials in the capital, Port Moresby, were working to contact their counterparts in the outer provinces, but hours after the quake, there still had been no reports of damage or injuries, said Mose, of the national disaster center. He said he was confident the nation had averted a major catastrophe.

The quake caused strong shaking and knocked items off shelves in Kokopo, and was felt 800 kilometers (500 miles) away in Port Moresby, said Chris McKee, assistant director of the Geophysical Observatory in Port Moresby.

Earthquakes are common in Papua New Guinea. The country lies on the "Ring of Fire" — an arc of earthquake and volcanic activity that stretches around the Pacific Rim.
