Thanks, girls. I agree it's a bad idea for the press to reveal the whereabouts of the president's children -- especially if they aren't with them.

Also didn't mean for it to appear that I had no concerns for the citizens of Mexico. I just saw that city name and was sure I'd read that's where Malia and her schoolmates were.

Hope ALL are safe and the aftershocks will be minimal.

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit central Chile on Sunday, injuring three people and prompting emergency officials to order an evacuation along parts of the coast.

There were no immediate reports of major damage.

The earthquake was at a depth of 21.6 miles (34.8 km) and struck 16 miles (27 km) north-northwest of Talca, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It had originally reported the quake was offshore and had a magnitude of 7.2.

No tsunami warning was issued and authorities initially canceled an evacuation order that had been issued for parts of the coast. They reissued that order late Sunday as a preventative measure.

Three people were injured as a result of the quake, emergency officials said. One person was in a traffic accident in the Biobio region and two people sustained light injuries when a ceiling collapsed.

Talca was one of the cities hit hard by a devastating 8.8-magnitude earthquake in 2010

@Butrflynet,
Quake hits central Chile; no reports of deaths

By EVA VERGARA, Associated Press – 39 minutes ago

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — A magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck central Chile Sunday night, the strongest and longest that many people said they had felt since a huge quake devastated the area two years ago. Some people were injured by falling ceiling material, but there were no reports of major damage or deaths due to quake-related accidents.

The quake struck at 7:30 p.m. about 16 miles (27 kilometers) north-northwest of Talca, a city of more than 200,000 people where residents said the shaking lasted about a minute.

Buildings swayed in Chile's capital 136 miles (219 kilometers) to the north, and people living along a 480-mile (770-kilometer) stretch of Chile's central coast were briefly warned to head for higher ground.

Residents were particularly alarmed in Constitucion, where much of the coastal downtown at the mouth of a river was obliterated by the tsunami caused by the 8.8-magnitude quake in 2010.

Panic also struck in Santiago and other cities, with people running out of skyscrapers, and many neighborhoods were left partly or totally without electrical power. Phone service collapsed due to heavy traffic.

"There are some injuries but nothing serious," said Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter, who was serving as acting president while Sebastian Pinera is on tour in Asia.

Hinzpeter said authorities were conducting a thorough survey of the affected regions to look for damage.

The Chilean navy's hydrographic and oceanographic service and the national emergency office called off a tsunami warning for most of the central coast after an analysis showed the quake wasn't the type to provoke killer waves.

The alert was restored for the area closest to the epicenter after police noticed the ocean had retreated about 130 feet (40 meters) from the shore in the towns of Iloca and Duao. A sharp outsurge of surf sometimes is followed by a tsunami.

Many coastal residents were staying away from the shore in any case, remembering how the government said there would be no tsunami just before huge waves struck after the 2010 quake, killing 156 of the 524 victims of that disaster.

With aftershocks rattled the region, many people living inland didn't want to go back inside their homes, either.

In Parral, about 230 miles (370 kilometers) south of the capital, Mayor Israel Urrutia said a 74-year-old woman died of a heart attack during the quake, and he blamed it on the shaking.

State television reported that parts of the ceiling fell from a church in Maipu, west of Santiago, slightly injuring some parishioners. Similar problems were reported with the roof of a shopping mall in La Florida, south of the capital.

State copper giant Codelco said its mines were functioning normally.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake occurred 19 miles (30 kilometers) deep.

It was the second significant quake in as many days for central Chile, where people were shaken awake Saturday morning by a 5.1-magnitude temblor that caused no major damage or injuries even though its epicenter was in metropolitan Santiago.

Earthquake of Magnitude 6.2 Strikes Off Northern California

By Heather Langan

Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck off California’s northern coast, the U.S. Geological Survey said in an e-mailed alert.

The temblor struck at 5:43 a.m. local time today, at a depth of 62 miles (100 kilometers), the USGS said. The quake took place 133 miles west of Eureka, California, the monitoring agency said.

AROMAS, Calif. (AP) -- Four small earthquakes struck Central and Southern California early Saturday, but there are no reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said a magnitude-4.1 quake hit the Ridgecrest area of Kern County shortly before 1:15 p.m. The same area had a 3.2-magnitude quake at 3 this morning.

Two earthquakes also struck the Salinas Valley along the Central Coast.

A magnitude-3.2 quake hit just before 5 Saturday morning and a second quake of the same magnitude followed two minutes later.

The quakes were centered near the town of Aromas and about 35 miles from San Jose.

A 3.0-magnitude quake struck the same area at about 10:30 Friday night.

The latest tumblor came after an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck off California's northern coast about 133 miles west of Eureka Thursday.

There is no way to predict when or even know which fault is the most active or that a new fault will suddenly be created, like the deep one in the San Fernando valley in 1971, so all we can is hope and wait

Even the experts were confounded by the 1971 quake , like nothing I have ever tracked, one of them said. The weirdest part of all was when I finally got out of bed and checked the damage, my hanging chandelier was moving around in a wide circle, not back and forth as you'd expect.

@Butrflynet,
I heard about this (the Sumatran quake) early today, and they had worry of tsunamis. Apparently that warning has now been cancelled, and that the relief from having to face that was the movement of the quake (lateral as opposed to vertical...no, I didn't figure that on my own, read it in the article).

Hopefully they weren't premature in doing this cancellation.

Ian Williams, NBC NewsChannel
The US Pacific Tsunami early warning center has now canceled its alert for the Indian Ocean although some local alerts remain in place.

That's being greeted with enormous relief in a region where memories are still raw over the 2004 quake and tsunami that killed more than a quarter of a million people.

Today's 8.6 quake was felt across the region.

Experts say the quake though powerful is what they call a lateral quake, meaning the movement was sideways not vertical and they say that reduced the chances of a destructive tsunami.

The quake was the most serious test yet for the early warning system set up after the 2004 tsunami and they do seem to have succeeded in getting people out of harm's way. Even though the quake generated mostly fear rather than destruction.

@Butrflynet,
The USGS seems to be having trouble pinpointing these latest quakes. They've updated, revised and finally deleted the California one, leaving the quakes offshore Oregon and Mexico.

By the way, if anyone asks, I really dislike the newly revised USGS mapping and info system.
