Quote:
Dozens of earth quakes continue to rattle residents in an area just south west of Hawthorne, Nevada. Seismologists at UNR are keeping a close eye on that activity. So far, the largest quake in the swarm is a 4.4, at 3:10 Wednesday afternoon. The activity continued into Friday with two more 4.0 quakes, and one 4.3. This recent activity has also been close to the earth’s surface which makes it easer to feel and more likely to cause damage.

Graham Kent, Director of the UNR Seismology Lab says the quakes are not happing directly on a fault line it’s difficult to say how big they might get. He says if they were along the Walker Lake fault it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect a quake as large as a magnitude 7.0. Graham also says the activity could shift suddenly. “"We could be looking at Hawthorne, and the next big earthquake could happen in Reno in a couple hours,” warns Kent. “So we always have to be prepared.”

Quote:
Six earthquakes of magnitude 3 or more struck southwest of Hawthorne today, continuing a series of quakes that started in the area on Sunday.

That was enough that the University of Nevada, Reno Seismological Laboratory is sending more equipment to the area to get a better idea of what is happening.

“If we get our assets a little closer we can do a better job of understanding where it’s at right now — just the geometry, what’s the potential size and orientation,” said Graham Kent, director of the seismology lab.

With more seismometers, the lab will better determine if it is rupturing on a single plane or multiple planes, he said. It appears the quakes are coming from a previously unmapped fault, but Kent said as the earthquake in Haiti showed, unmapped faults can produce major quakes.

The challenge right now is getting to the top of TV Hill just west of Walker Lake so it can install more equipment to communicate with the seismometers. The snow is so deep that a snowmobile won’t work, Kent said.

The Mineral County Sheriff’s Office reported there has been no damage reported because of the quakes, the largest being a magnitude 4.4 on Wednesday.

Kent said a lab employee was in the sheriff’s office when a magnitude 4.0 hit at 11:21 a.m. today and everyone there could feel it. There was also a magnitude 4.3 at 6:33 a.m. today.

Tom Rennie, a seismic analyst for the lab, said there’s nothing unusual about the string of quakes. In the past million years of Nevada history, just about every place in the state has had quakes like this near by.

“We should be prepared anywhere in the state to have this kind of activity,” Rennie said.

@Butrflynet,
Farmerman, if you're reading still, what does this quote from the above story mean? Are they trying to determine if it is a new slip fault or thrust fault?

Baja is experiencing a swarm of quakes at the moment. Will wait a bit before posting the bigger ones to see if they increase or decrease. So far there have been 5 or 6 in the last few minutes.
