4.3-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Carlsbad

The Associated Press

CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - A relatively small earthquake struck about 19 miles northwest of Carlsbad in southern New Mexico on Saturday.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the 4.3-magnitude earthquake occurred just after 6 p.m. in a "very remote location."

Dale Grant, a USGS geophysicist, says a number of people in the area reported feeling the quake for about five to six seconds.

There were no reports of injuries or damages.

Grant says 10 earthquakes of similar strength have hit the area in the last five years and that Saturday's quake was "not extraordinary by any stretch.

Saturday quake tally reaches five

Posted By jason.owens On April 4, 2010 @ 10:50 am

In Local News
Five small earthquakes struck Saturday and today in the same area of northern Baja California and were close enough to be felt in San Diego County.

The largest hit Saturday just after 4 p.m. and was estimated at magnitude 4.3. Its epicenter was about 30 miles southeast of Calexico and 100 miles east of Tijuana, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The first weekend quake was magnitude 3.2 at 1:40 p.m. Saturday, and it was followed by a magnitude 3.2 at 12:52 a.m. and a 3.4 shaker at 2:36 a.m. today, according to the USGS.

There was no known damage as a result of the quakes, the latest of hundreds of small quakes that have been rattling the Imperial Valley and East County since 2007. The swarm is centered near Guadalupe Victoria, a small farming town 19 miles southeast of Mexicali.

A small volcano there erupted about 10,000 years ago, and geologists say the quake swarm emanates from shallow magma fields associated with tectonic forces that are steadily separating Baja California from the rest of North America.

Mexican Earthquake Felt In Los Angeles

Andy Jack, Sky News Online
An eathquake with a magnitude of 6.9 has been reported in Baja California, Mexico - US Geographical Survey.

Buildings were rocked as far away as Tijuana and Los Angeles and Palm Springs in California

Mexican officials had no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Hotel worker Benito Rodriquez told Sky News: "Everything was shaking. The mirrors were moving - I was hoping they would not break."

"I'm shaking like a leaf ... the pool water was just going everywhere," said Jean Nelson in Indio, California, outside Palm Springs.

A witness in Tijuana said cars in a car park could be seen jolting with the quake.

The quake was felt in downtown Los Angeles, witnesses said.

The quake struck at 15:40 Pacific time (2340 BST) 16 miles south southwest of Guadalupe Victoria at a depth of 20 miles.

The quake was 108 miles east southeast of Tijuana.

Multiple aftershocks were reported.

@Butrflynet,
Ive looked at the worldwide GPS data from along pplate triple points and nothing seems unuasually fast moving . Must be something related to external stresses. Im sure there will be afew papers on the simultaneity of all these quakes around the ring of fire this year (including the snake river hotspot where Yellowstone is)

We thought it would never stop. That one was pretty long too - good 30 seconds. We were visiting grandma who lives inland, about 20 miles from the
coast and things shook up pretty good.
We just got home and found cabinet doors open and a few things had fallen
out and are broken. So the quake was probably much stronger here in La Jolla.

So many quakes in the last few hours and all in the inland corridor surrounding
San Diego.

USGS has raised the magnitude from 6.9 to 7.2. That's about the same as the 1989 Loma Prieta quake in the Bay Area. They also changed the depth for the quake from 20+ miles below the surface to just 6.2 miles.

Major quake in Mexico rocks southwestern US corner
AFP
Published: Sunday April 4, 2010

A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake near the Mexico-US border Sunday rocked buildings as far away as Los Angeles and was felt in a wide area in the two countries, officials said.

The US Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at 2240 GMT, was at a depth of 32.3 kilometers (20.1 miles) was located 26 kilometers (16 miles) south-southwest of Guadalupe Victoria, Baja California, Mexico.

It was 64 kilometers (40 miles) southwest of San Luis, in the US state of Arizona, the USGS added.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said its initial assessment found "no significant damage or injuries" but had responded to an increase in automatic alarms and stuck elevators.

The fire department said was checking transportation infrastructures, large places of assemblage, apartment buildings and power lines from the ground and the air to ensure safety.

The temblor was forceful enough to move buildings in Los Angeles and San Diego in southern California, as well as in Arizona, The Los Angeles Times reported.

The Times said rides were temporarily closed at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim.

KABC Television in Los Angeles said high-rise buildings in that city and in San Diego rocked back and forth when the quake hit.

The report said Los Angeles City Fire Department crews were responding to people trapped in stalled elevators in the city, but there were no reports of serious damage, power outages or injuries in Los Angeles.

The Yuma, Arizona, sheriff's department also told AFP it was responding to many building alarms but that it had no immediate reports of injuries.

In Mexico, the National Seismological Institute said it had no early reports of injuries or damage in the northwestern state.

An agency official, Adriana Gonzalez, said that people had reported feeling the quake across a wide area of Baja California and Sonora states.

The USSG said it had reports that quake was felt as far away as Las Vegas, Nevada, some 460 kilometers (290 miles) from the epicenter as well as in Los Angeles, 360 kilometers away, and in Phoenix, Arizona (300 kilometers).

Another aftershock, this one is bigger than the 5.1 in the Imperial Valley. Makes me think that the two zones are not related and it could be a cascade effect along the various faults that intersect there.

@Butrflynet,
In the news conference she's saying that any quake within about 50 miles of the epicenter, they're calling it an aftershock of the main event. Any quakes outside the 50 mile zone they're now calling those "triggered" quakes because people have gotten so upset about them being called aftershocks.

I like that concept. I think movement on one fault does trigger activity on other nearby faults, especially in SoCal with their spider web of fault lines.

Magnitude-7.2 quake strikes Baja California
By CHRISTOPHER WEBER Associated Press Writer © 2010 The Associated Press
April 4, 2010, 8:00PM

People gather at a parking lot outside their buildings after 6.9 earthquake hit the area in Tijuana, Mexico, Sunday, April 4, 2010. According to the US Geological Survey a 6.9 magnitude earthquake was registered 26 kms (around 16 miles) south west Guadalupe Victoria, in the Mexican state of Baja California.

LOS ANGELES " Minor damage has been reported in Mexico's northern Baja California after a magnitude-7.2 earthquake that was felt in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada.

The largest earthquake in the region in nearly 18 years struck at 3:40 p.m. Sunday more than 100 miles southeast of San Diego.

Tijuana Fire Chief Rafael Carillo says firefighters were rescuing people trapped in a hotel elevator. He says firefighters so far are receiving reports of only minor damage.

Near the epicenter, receptionist Juan Carlos Fernandez says there was minor damage at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Mexicali. The damage includes broken pipes and windows.

More than 5,000 Southern California Edison customers were affected, mostly with 30 seconds of flickering lights.

Associated Press writer Mariana Jimenez in Tijuana, Mexico, contributed to this report.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

LOS ANGELES (AP) " A strong earthquake south of the U.S.-Mexico border Sunday swayed high-rises in downtown Los Angeles and San Diego and was felt across Southern California and Arizona, knocking out power and breaking pipes in some areas but causing no major damage.

The 7.2-magnitude quake struck at 3:40 p.m. in Baja California, Mexico, about 19 miles southeast of Mexicali, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was initially reported as a magnitude-6.9 quake. The updated magnitude was still an estimate, according to USGS seismologist Lucy Jones.

The area was hit by magnitude-3.0 quakes all week.

"It's been quite a while since we've had an earthquake this large," Jones said. "The last time we had an earthquake this large in either Baja or California was in 1992 with the Landers Earthquake, which was 7.3."

The USGS reported three strong aftershocks within the hour, including a magnitude-5.1 jolt in the Imperial County desert east of San Diego. Magnitude-4.5 and magnitude-4.3 aftershocks were also reported.

The 7.2-magnitude quake was felt as far north as Santa Barbara, USGS seismologist Susan Potter said.

Strong shaking was reported in the Coachella Valley and Riverside. The earthquake rattled buildings on the west side of Los Angeles and in the San Fernando Valley, interrupting Easter dinners. Chandeliers swayed and wine jiggled in glasses.

In San Diego, there were reports of shattered windows, broken pipes and water main breaks in private buildings, but no reports of injuries, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque said.

Coronado Bridge over San Diego Bay was briefly closed by the California Highway Patrol as a precaution.

In Los Angeles, water sloshed out of residential swimming pools, the city fire department went on "earthquake status," and some stalled elevators were reported. No major damage was reported in Los Angeles or San Diego.

One woman called firefighters and said she was stuck in an elevator descending from the 34th floor in a building in Century City, but there was no way to immediately know if the breakdown was tied the quake, Los Angeles firefighter Eric Scott said.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power spokeswoman Maryanne Pierson said there were no power outages anywhere in the city.

"It sounds like it's felt by at least 20 million people at this point," Jones said. "Most of Southern California felt this earthquake."

The quake was felt for about 40 seconds in Tijuana, Mexico, causing buildings to sway and knocking out power in parts of the city. Families celebrating Easter ran out of the homes, with children screaming and crying.

Baja California state Civil Protection Director Alfredo Escobedo said there were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage. But he said the assessment was ongoing.

In Arizona, 3,369 customers in the Yuma area had a "relatively momentary outage" from the quake, Arizona Public Service Company spokesman Don Wool said.

Only about 70 people were still without service in the rural Gadsden and Summerton areas. But Wool said he expected electricity to be restored there in about two hours.

He said the tremor was enough "to trip open some breakers, but we were able to manually close those very quickly."

Clint Norred, a spokesman for the Yuma, Ariz., Police Department, said the quake was very strong there but he'd heard no reports of injuries or major damage.

"In my house, it knocked a couple of things off the wall," he said.

His home lost power for about 15 minutes.

Yuma gets tremors from time to time he said, but Sunday's was "probably one of the better ones that I can remember, and I was born and raised here."

In the Phoenix area, Jacqueline Land said her king-sized bed in her second-floor apartment felt like a boat gently swaying on the ocean.

"I thought to myself, 'That can't be an earthquake. I'm in Arizona,'" the Northern California native said.

Mike Wong, who works at a journalism school in downtown Phoenix, said he was in his second-floor office getting some work done Sunday afternoon when he heard sounds and felt the building start to sway.

"I heard some cracking sounds, like Rice Krispies," coming from the building, he said. "I didn't think much of it, but I kept hearing it, and then I started feeling a shake. I thought, 'You know what? I think that might be an earthquake."

Wong said the swaying lasted for "just a few seconds," and he didn't notice any damage.

A dispatcher with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department said the agency had not received any calls for service after the quake.
