Not necessarily; e.g., Jack Benny ofen had pauses in between.
Obviously my discussion was not to be considered an exhaustive dissertation on the aspects of humor. Yes, timing is also an important aspect.

Why would anyone mention Jack Benny in a discussion on humor?

@Setanta,
Im afraid we are going to lose control in this investigation into what Dave considers as "humor".

I believe he has a set iof filters that only allow him to laugh at extreme right wing humor and this filter does not allow his brain to see the absurdity in many POVs, including his own.

Its a poor SOH that requires filtration.
Reminds me of Sr Attila in 4th grade. She had a series of "jokes" about what beverages we would enjoy in heaven
They included "Adoramus Tea" and "Glorificamus Tea"

AGGGGGHHHHHH

During my navy time, I used to tell the newcomers that we only got "Hanging Down Tea", alternatively "Instant Limp Tea" when we stayed a couple of days on sea ...

Unaware of the war waged on her, Christmas will come and go.
The days will get longer.
The decorations will come down.

And we'll all start bitching about how the candy and flower lobbies are
manipulating Valentine's Day.

Im sorry. I sure as hell cant explain it as a discussion in logic because,
as you know, logic often has no bearing in humor. [I do NOT know that; I deny what u allege. David]
We, in fact, dispense with logic
eg

How do you get an elephant into a refrigerator?

A: You open the dorr and then insert the elephant and then close the door.

How do you get a giraffe into a refrigerator

A: You open the door and remove the elepehant . Then you insert the giraffe and then close the door.

The King of the jungle threw a [party for the animals who made it?

A: everybody except the giraffe cause he was in the refrigerator.

Eg 2. (Steve WRight)

If your travelling at the speed of light and you turn on your headlights, does anything happen?

Dispensation of reason, logic etc is often a big part of enjoying humor.
If you dont "get it" perhaps you should work on your appreciation of the absurd.

Quote:
1. the joke falsely assumes that there is a difference
in appearance between rightists and leftists
(i.e., that u can tell their philosophy by seeing the shapes of their heads)

No it didnt. I say, a pox on both your houses because you both need each others extreme philosophoies to survive and justify your own worldviews. [I deny that. If that were true, then freedom
coud not survive unless slavery also existed. David]

AS Eisenhower once quipped

"The left wing will defame the right and the right wing will demonize the left,
Meanwhile, the bird in the middle will be dying"
Farmer, to be charitable, the most that can be
said of your purported examples of humor, is that thay are
very mildly comedic, such as to evoke a gentle smile
from one who hears them, as distinct from intensely funny jokes.
The latter must be and actually ARE laid over an infrastructure of competent logic.
Such jokes can be hysterically humorous,
evoking many minutes of helpless laffter,
whereas the most that can be expected from your
examples is a smile.

In other words: non-logical humor is ineffective
insofar as eliciting intense laffter is concerned.
It just does not work.

Your examples are such as what might be expected
from a child in the very first years of life.

It appears that Ike's comment was intended to credit
the value of bipartisan harmony, not to cause intense laffter.
He was not a comedian; no one ever accused him of being funny.

I accept your word that u are a scientist,
and hence u MUST be and u are a competent logician.
As such, it is very unlikely that u actually believe
what u wrote. I am confident that u are more intelligent than that.

I have nothing bad to say about him.
He did his job successfully, for a long time.
He was a comedian.

Its not really my kind of joke (kind of a prude), but to a lot of people, it probably was funny. I don't think it was meant to have a point. A lot of jokes are just funny without a point.

Oh, please, tell us an intensely funny joke that will have laughing out of couches and holding our bellies with tears streaming down our eyes. I can't wait.

In the meanwhile I am content with a funny quip which is all too true.

@farmerman,
It's amazing how many on the left and the right claim to be the bird in the middle.
