Here's a fun little test of your knowledge of the African continent. I bet you know more than you think! :-D

1. True or False - the main language of Angola is Spanish. Setanta is correct; they speak Portuguese there.
2. Part of what we call the Middle East is in Africa. Which part? Setanta is half-right; he got Egypt. Piffka got the other half: Libya.
3. In the past few years, there were mass killings of Hutu and Tutsi tribespeople in which nation? Setanta is correct; it's Rwanda.
4. Which country was founded by freed African slaves from the US? Setanta is correct; it's Liberia.
5. Where is Olduvai Gorge, where the Leakeys found evidence of early humans? Piffka is right; it's Tanzania.
6. Which country broke away from Ethiopia recently to gain its independence? Setanta is correct; it's Eritrea.
7. True or False - there are two countries with the word Congo in their names, and two countries with the word Guinea in their names. Setanta is correct. They are Congo (Brazzaville), Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
8. Where was Kunta Kinte from, in Roots? Setanta is right. It's Gambia.
9. Where is Casablanca? Setanta is right; it's Morocco.
10. Bob Dylan wrote a song about which African nation? hebba is right; it's Mozambique. Many thanks to Piffka for the lyrics!

Edited to show correct answers.

We still don't have - half of #2, #5 and #10 (it's entirely possible that there's more than one correct answer for #10 - I haven't checked Embarrassed).

#5 isn't Tanganyika? I know it's a T-word... Tanzania? Is that a country?

#2, the other half... let's see. Libya??? I don't think it's Morocco, even though they're Muslim.

C'mon Jespah. tell, tell

Ohhhhh. Brilliant!

I'm going to find the lyrics... I loved that song! Why didn't I think of it???

I like to spend some time in Mozambique
The sunny sky is aqua blue
And all the couples dancing cheek to cheek.
It's very nice to stay a week or two.

There's lots of pretty girls in Mozambique
And plenty time for good romance
And everybody likes to stop and speak
To give the special one you seek a chance
Or maybe say hello with just a glance.

Lying next to her by the ocean
Reaching out and touching her hand,
Whispering your secret emotion
Magic in a magical land.

And when it's time for leaving Mozambique,
To say goodbye to sand and sea,
You turn around to take a final peek
And you see why it's so unique to be
Among the lovely people living free
Upon the beach of sunny Mozambique.

#5 is Tanzania. I was at the Olduvai Gorge last year in April, and visited the area where Mary Leakey did most of her famous digs. They also have a small but very good museum on the site. Our small group had lunch there overlooking the gorge. c.i.

No prob shoshannah (Susannah in Hebrew, yes? :-D)!

Jespah was supposed to be a Biblical name, according to Born Free, but Joy Adamson, the author of Born Free, said she couldn't find the name in her Bible and thought it might be a corruption of Japheth (Noah's youngest son).

Thanks! I guess that explains why I couldn't find any info about it on the internet under "African names". In fact, the only references I saw were in user names.

Your question about the Hebrew name is interesting. Yes it is Susannah in Hebrew. My name is Carol, but I have a sister Susan. Years ago my mother told me our Hebrew names, but she couldn't decide who was who. She thought I was Shoshannah but wasn't sure. Some years later she decided that was right. I suspect my real Hebrew name is Shalometh, but since I liked Shoshannah better, and my sister doesn't seem to care, I just adopted it! Smile

shosh, Welcome to A2K. jespah, Interesting data on Africa. I think we need further info on this continent, because most people ignore/disengage themselves when we hear anything about Africans. More knowledge is needed.
