This used to be a barroom bet. I learned to do it by picturing a map of the lower 48, transiting from New England and going East to West. Its not difficult (especially when drinks were at stake)
I got 49 quickly and could not think of the 50th. Kept working rows of states in my head. I missed Hawaii.

@Rockhead,
I tried a number of different shorthands N. or No for North but you have to peck out each and every single letter for each and every state. 'Twas a mission, I tell ya!

@Victor Murphy,
That was frustrating. I named all but one state in five minutes and then sat here for another 5 trying to figure out which one I'd forgotten. I even knew what part of the country it was in. Nebraska, grrr.
That was fun. It frustrated me till I just started working through the alphabet. That made it a lot easier for me.

@littlek,
I had a hard time spelling Massachusetts - but I mulled good 2 minutes on
the very last state and couldn't get it. When it showed up - I hit my forehead!
