@Izzie,
I've driven past the Yass MacDonalds easily a hundred times (it's between Canberra and Sydney) and I've never seen that sign (just the x km to Macca's signs). Is it new, or photoshopality?

@hingehead,
Sign in Butcher's Shop window:

Watership Down:

You've read the book.

You've seen the film.

Now eat the meat.

Slightly off-topic, but there is a funny billboard situation in Iowa. There is a porn shop near exit 179 that is called the 'Adult Superstore'. They have always had a black billboard with big yellow block letters with their name on it. Well a new billboard was put up a couple years ago about 5 miles before the exit, that has the same black background with yellow block letters. It reads "JESUS: The Adult Super Savior". I hate billboards that try to change peoples beliefs, but at least these guys have a sense of humor.

@Nick Ashley,
We have a local situation too -- there is a horrible eyesore, an old hotel that was disgusting when it was still operational but has been sitting vacant for a long time, awaiting destruction. There has been a lot of bickering about what to do with the site so the hotel (a big one, with a couple of other buildings also in the vicinity) slowly molders. Gross, torn-up blacktop with weeds, boarded-up windows, general horribleness.

Above it all, a big billboard:

@Nick Ashley,
That is pretty cute Nick.
Also off topic:
There is/was an org in Australia that did 'purposeful' graffiti of billboards; BUGA-UP (Billboard Utilising Graffitists Against Unhealthy Promotions). Should probably be another discussion but here's an example:

Used to run it like a commute.

@Rockhead,
Yep, thats the one. Somewhere inbetween Iowa City and Des Moines. I looked for pictures Robert, but couldn't find any online Sad (I'd take some myself if they weren't 200 miles away. Not going that way again until Christmas)

I did find this article though (also with no pictures)

Apparently it's Portugese and it says 'The Axe effect'. Axe being a men's deodorant. Only moderately more dodgy than the Lynx ads.

Ooooh... HH - sorry if it's not a real one... have found a few websites with it on so thinks it''s good...

Taken from the webpages...
"Yass is a small town in New South Wales - population about 5,000. Incredibly, it sits on the banks of the Yass river. The name Yass is an aboriginal term meaning “running water”. I think the local McDonalds is looking for a new Marketing manager."

Yass is a town in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia in Yass Valley Shire. The name appears to have been derived from an Aboriginal word, "Yarrh" (or "Yharr"), said to mean 'running water'.

Yass is located about 280 km southwest of Sydney, on the Hume Highway. The Yass River, which is a tributary of the Murrumbidgee River, flows past the town. Yass is 56km from Canberra.

Yass has an impressive and historic main street, with well-preserved 19th century verandah post pubs (mostly converted to other uses). It is popular with tourists, some from Canberra and others taking a break from the Hume Highway.

The Pride of Erin Festival and Yass Show are held in March and the Yass Arts-and-Crafts Festival in November.
