To an extent that is correct, they have to be common words you would use in everyday life and there are probably still a few exceptions.

Yes - you can work it out - but reading is a lot slower.

It's an interesting thought, though - sort of "words as pictures". Slight changes in the picture don't upset the overall understanding?

I've been wondering a bit about this lately!

Amongst other things this demonstrates active versus passive perception i.e. "facts" are a function of anticipation.

I think it's more the fact that we live with so many bad spellers around us (such as myself) that it is second nature to figure out the words as we read them no matter how messed up they are. It has just become easy over time lol

Having a sound knowledge of English helps as well to predict the words from the context in which they were used, and from those on either side. Perhaps this is an extension of margo's point of 'words as pictures' in that certain groups of words are commonly used together.
