No its not a joke.

A team of respected academics and theologians from Oxford and Cambridge university ("independent of government") are to explain what Islam means to Muslims living in the 21st century.

This was immediately condemned by an Islamic scholar.

But govt insist the initiative came from Muslims themselves, worried about the rise of extremism in their midst.

I don't think I can comment unless I have more information.

Do you have a link with a more complete story?

Here a few things I would advise

The Koran is not the final perfect absolute word of God. Its a plagiarism of a plagiarism of hearsay myth and rumour about events that never happened. The preposterous story about the origin of the Koran could only ever be believed by the gullible or those willing to be self deceived. Moreover the very earliest Koranic texts differ from the modern version, so what ever it is, it is not the final word of God. And what about all the artefacts on which the scribes wrote down the original words of God...Why does not one of them exist in a museum perhaps as a prize exhibit? The early Islamic scholars must have thrown away or lost the original words of God. Which seems surprising at best or disrespectful to God at worst. Or perhaps the story of them writing down everything that Mohammed did and said is just that...a made up story. It never happened.

Islam is not a peaceful religion. The word Islam does not mean peace, it means submission. Everywhere there is religious conflict, it involves Islam viz. Muslim Hindu Muslim Jew Muslim Christian Muslim (another type of) Muslim Muslim Buddhist Muslim Sikh. Mohammed was a war lord who invented a new religion to justify conquest. In the words of one academic "Mohammad's God endorsed a policy of conquest, instructing his believers to fight against unbelievers wherever they might be found. In short Mohammad had to conquer, his followers liked to conquer, and his deity told him to conquer". Islam spread by the sword in little over 100 years from Arabia to India and Spain. Not by peace but by conquest and submission of neighbouring tribes.

I might have some more advice later.

Quote:
The British government is to fund a board of Islamic theologians in an attempt to sideline violent extremists.

I thought if someone broke the law in Britain, you were tried and if found guilty, punished accordingly. APPLY the law without FEAR or FAVOUR !
Quote:
It will provide funding and support for the project but maintains that the board's work will be completely independent of political interference.
The board's work will focus on examining issues relating to Islam's place in Britain and obligations as a citizen.

Isn't the obligation of a citizen to obey the law of the land ?
Quote:
Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra, a leading imam from Leicester, said establishing a specialist board was the brainchild of a group of Muslims, not the government.

So the taxpayers foot the bill again huh ?
Quote:
This board has to be something owned by us, driven by us but supported by government. We've made it clear that it's not for government to touch our theology or touch the way we train our people.

It appears the only support the government is required to give is money.
I feel sorry for you Brits. It appears you have a bunch of middle aged academic bet wetters trying to prove how culturally aware they are.
They are selling you out !
Soon you will have 2 laws of the land ...
Wake up before its too late.

Well of course they are not 'independent of the government ' if they are appointed by the government to teach the correctness of a specific view (or the incorrectness of a specific view), are they?
