watch this practical solution disappear with all the other ones
It probably will disappear. There's no money in it.
The microbes are not genetically modified so can't be patented.
It would be costly to build a plant to run all your trash bags filled with trash through a solution for 6 weeks to get rid of the bags before the rest of the trash goes to a landfill. 6 weeks of trash is a lot of trash in most metro areas.
Removing the trash from the bags and putting the bags in a microbe solution would also be costly. It could probably only be done by hand sorting.
Without a government requirement this won't happen anytime soon.
Of course this could lead to genetically modified microbes that eat plastic and can survive and thrive in the landfill. Perhaps a liquid filled with the microbes sprayed on trash as it is buried.
