As a couple of you know, I'm planning a trip to see my family in Somerset. I would like to hook up with a couple of you (for sure), but need to know where you are... so I can plan trains, planes and automobiles.

Izzie and McT... could you just pinpoint on a map where you are? And any info you can provide about trains or routes would be helpful.

I know this is early (trip should be in October), but I will likely be in camp most of the interim.

McT - you're near Manchester, so I can fly into there and then drive down to Somerset, and Izzie, you said you're in Dortmund, I believe? I should really just look at a map myself, but you know how it is!

Also, any chance, once we get things sorted, of convening somewhere mid-point?

Think about it. And get back to me. Laughing

Mame,

Somerset is 4 hours drive from Manchester or 3 hours from London Heathrow.

The closest city (1 hr Somerset) with substantial air links is Bristol (NY daily) or for coach/rail links is Bath. I suggest you google "Bristol Airport" - "UK train enquiries" - "UK National Coach enquiries", for further research.

Hey Mame

Tulip and I are down in DEVON - next door to Somerset. I am near LYDFORD right on the edge of Dartmoor which is just off the A30 (main road through Devon and Cornwall. The M5 (motoway starts at Exeter and takes you right up North to Manchester. Easy Peasy) Very Happy

We have Exeter Airport 30 miles away and Plymouth Airport 25 miles away. Bristol is the main International airport which is about 1.5hrs drive.

Manchester is about a 5 hour drive from Devon.

Which town in Somerset are the relly's in???? You could be as close as 45 mins away. Taunton in Somerset is less than an hour away from us.

There are trains to Taunton (Somerset), Honiton (Devon), Exeter (Devon) and Plymouth (Devon) from pretty much any part of the country - and I can pick you up wherever is best for you

Will PM you the other details.

Looking forward to seeing ya! Very Happy

(more than welcome to use the car (beast-van) whilst down in these parts if you drop me up to work! Smile )

Thanks for the maps, Izzie, and the invitation Smile And thanks, Fresco, for the advice. That's wonderful that Devon's so close to Somerset! We will stop in with you for sure, Iz... it'll be a hoot.

Off to work now, but back later.

I once went to Lydford. It's a dump. There's more things you can't do than you can do.

It was probably okay in King Alfred's day when all the wenches were running around in the bushes squeaking but now it's just another "fleece the tourist" dump. And to fleece 'em you have to get them there and barry is doing his bit in that cause.

Are the Ladies Toilets up to modern American standards barry?

From my numerous trips stateside, the "johns" were no better or worse than back home.
What,in your opinion,we may lack in toilet hygiene,we more than make up for in stunning countryside,of which Dartmoor is a prime example. But when there, don't get lost in the mist. There's tales of big hairy things roaming, looking for lost and weary travellers  .

You inspected the Ladies Toilets did you barry? It was those I mentioned. Not the "johns". Mame is a lady and I have been told that American Ladies are used to very high standards and expect, as a matter of course, pristine conditions when they lower their bare bottoms down upon the throne.

One should try to keep in mind that Lydford is not the only place competing for Mame's patronage and I was merely putting in a word on behalf of all the other places as it seemed a little unfair if Lydford had a clear field at A2K's expense.

In Blackpool, say, they don't do tales of big hairy things roaming, looking for lost and weary travellers. They are more into the real thing in Blackpool. Tales are for the kiddiwinks.

BLACKPOOL!! Now there's a dump if ever I saw one. It's a tired, rundown seaside resort well past it's prime. The last time I was there I stayed at The Hilton. Not a patch on it's London namesake, more like a 2 star B&B.During the day,it's best to walk around looking at the pavement/sidewalk.Dirty,drab and very unloved architecture.
Great night-life though Very Happy .If you're after "the real thing",don't go to Funny Girls. If you want a very entertaining night out,go to Funny Girls Shocked .

Blackpool Pleasure Beach attracts about 6 million visitors a year. In 2007, the Pleasure Beach was ranked as 14th most popular theme park in the world with 5.5 million visitors. It was the only UK amusement park to make it onto the 'Top 25 Parks in the World' list. Rated 5th.

That doesn't stop it being a dump.

It's a disgrace to The County of Lancashire:-

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk175/JimmyTheJoint/Miscellaneous%20Photographs/171.jpg

Having a carbuncle like this on the front for starters is absolutely disgusting. The place has been pilloried as a filthy hole on television.

The whole lot needs flattening and turning into The Gambling Capital of Britain, as the planners and developers want too.

It's an antiquated slum, catering for 5.5 million loosers, obviously.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk175/JimmyTheJoint/Miscellaneous%20Photographs/172.jpg

It's that busy, the cars can do three point turns on THE PROMENADE.

Mid Summer and nobody there. The Streets and promenade are dead.

Like Spendi's pub. Washed up and obsolete.

The only way you could make this place look busy is by digging the dead up and sticking them in bus shelters.

You seem a bit obsessed with the dead Lardy.

You were leaning corpses on the bar in my pub the other night and now you're stacking them up in bus shelters.

We all know we have to make allowances for the fact that only the places you condescend to grace with your presence are wonderful and everywhere else is a dump full of losers.

Promenades normally have little traffic. People in resorts are not driving around all day long looking for new things to relieve their boredom.

We know how busy Blackpool is from the stats. Your subjective snobbery doesn't alter a thing.

Why don't you just say that you're the poshest, most intelligent, wisest, richest and best looking A2Ker in all history and get it over with. There's no need to keep going all around the houses about it.

You can't write worth a blow and I would sign up for evening classes in photography if I was you.

You obviously feel a failure in society and begrudge those who have accomplished something.

You need something solid in your life so that you can look into the mirror and say,

"Yes, that is what I have done, that is what I have created and it is good, I respect myself."

Have you ever tried woodcarving?

You poor boy, obviously your not content with being kicked around the ID thread like the 'Village Idiot' you come across here and want more.

You are a sad, desperate excuse for a man, who's view of his own place in history and no doubt his local society has been shattered.

I feel somewhat sorry for you.

That could be the realisation of the issue.

You in turn become aware of peoples sorrow for your plight and it

'Warms the cockles of your little heart'

to think you are getting the response and attention you so badly crave.

Ah well, it takes all kinds.

Joe, I am in Vancouver so I would be flying directly to London, but NY is on my list of MUST SEE places. When I make it there, I will definitely be up for a visit with you (as long as you don't try to pay for all my meals like some have). As of now, I'm leaving for camp on Tuesday a.m. and will be there for some time. But yeah, I would love that. Let's see, there's you, Roboida, Kickycan... for starters.

Mame dear--

If somebody wishes to pay for your meals you should encourage them.

Village idiots know simple things like that.

Once eaten soon forgeeten is a very old English proverb.

If you don't fancy them you just excuse yourself and slip away into the night.

You're not a communist are you?
