If you pay what you owe a check for 600 per person will arrive fairly soon thereafter.

Joe(but you have to pay it back next April)Nation

Got a notice from the IRS on that, Joe. They say you don't have to declare it, but I suppose that just means they change the tables to increase the rate proportionately.

No. It's an advance on next year's refund.

You don't have to declare because they ALREADY know you got it.

Do you really think amigo.. that the government gives money like that away for free?

It is becoming a pattern... advancing money that they supposedly dont have.
Remember .. bush did this.. last year.. wasnt it..?

Yes.

Joe(So take your expected refund for next year and reduce it by what you got last week.)Nation

I never get a refund -- how can this be an advance against next year's refund and still be nontaxable?

It will be added to whatever tax bill you have.

If you normally pay, let's say, $8oo.oo, your tax liability will increase next year to $1400.00, just for that year. They did this in the first Bush term (the second year?) I ended up paying $1100. the next year.

I can't believe this crap. They actually advanced us our own money in hopes that we would go out and blow it. How come I haven't heard about this from anybody else? Why aren't they talking about this on the news?

So far they're saying it wont increase your tax bill for next year (2008 tax filings). It will be interesting to see if that changes between now and January.

What is it? It's an economic stimulus payment that more than 130 million households will receive starting in May. It's not taxable, and it won't reduce your 2007 or 2008 refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return. Source

Dagnabbit! I just cancelled my dental appointment for this weekend. Without that check I can't go. This bites. The dental coverage I got through the school sucks.

I was supposedly going to get mine deposited electronicly on May 9th but due to some weird problem with TurboTax I got a paper check in the mail this past Monday. Better late than never I suppose...

Even though TurboTax admits that there are problems for people that filed their taxes electronicly through their service they claim that it is only people that got refunds and had the filing fees deducted from their refund that will get the paper check.

That ain't true. So far it looks like about 90% of the people that filed using TurboTax's electronic filing are getting paper checks.

Well, I fall into that category - filed with turbotax and had them take fees from my refund before it was direct deposited. I wonder what they could have done to make the IRS change course?

It's a bit of a technical goof-up since the rules on getting these checks out wasn't exactly clear while people were filing.

If you filed through TurboTax then they created a temporary account with a bank in CA in your name. The IRS deposited your refund into that account, TurboTax deducted their fees and the remainder was then electronically transferred to your actual bank account. The temporary account was then deleted. Since the temp account was deleted the IRS can't send your electronic check to the account any more.

You'll get a paper check based on the last 2-digits of your social security number under the paper check schedule. Mad

Mine was mailed Friday and I got it Monday.
