This isn't it, but it may be close....

If the mother had died 3 days before the funeral, then including the day of the funeral, the sister died three weeks (21 days) after the mother.

All three women, the mother, the carpenter and her sister were nuns. The mother was actually the nun's Mother Superior. The sister might not have been actually related to the carpenter, but another nun 'sister'.

The young man was a Priest who performed services every Sunday, and also officiated at funerals. The previous Sunday, the Mother Superior had been accidentally crushed when some architectural feature (maybe an effigy of a saint?) in the Priest's chapel had collapsed.

When they returned to the chapel for the funeral, the devoted carpenter nun made a hasty repair to the effigy with glue that would last about 2 weeks, but would need a more permanent fix. In the excitement over the Mother Superior's death, the carpenter nun forgot to tell the Priest that the repairs were only temporary, and had she obtained his phone number at the funeral, she might have called him and warned him.

Being obviously absent-minded, the carpenter nun soon totally forgot about the temporary repair. The effigy stayed in place for two weeks, but then the glue gave out. The next Sunday when they returned to the chapel, the nun (sister) who had take over the Mother Superior's responsiblities, was sitting in the Mother's spot when the effigy again loosened and fell- killing her in the same way the Mother Superior had died three weeks earlier.

Maybe this is a lame answer- but I bet it is as feasible as the real answer.
