AP: France wants the U.N. Security Council to press Myanmar's military rulers to allow international aid into the country after a devastating cyclone, the foreign minister said Wednesday.

A massive international aid effort has been kept on hold by Myanmar's military rulers since the cyclone hit this weekend, killing more than 22,000 people and leaving an estimated 1 million homeless. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Myanmar's government to speed up the arrival of aid workers and relief supplies.

Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner told reporters in Paris, "It must be checked whether the government could be forced to let the necessary aid into the country."

"It's too early to say whether a common position of the international community would be possible," Kouchner said. But he added, "The United Nations has to prove its determination."

A French diplomatic official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of office policy, said there would be discussions on exactly what form the measure might take. Possibilities include a resolution or a declaration from the Security Council's president, the diplomat said.

The Irrawaddy: As Burma deals with the pain of one of the greatest humanitarian disasters in recent history, one face is conspicuous by its absence?- that of commander in chief of the Burmese armed forces and chairman of the ruling SPDC, Snr-Gen Than Shwe.

Than Shwe and his close aides, generals Maung Aye and Thura Shwe Mann, have all but disappeared since Cyclone Nargis hit Burma.

People in Burma who read and watch the state-run media told The Irrawaddy that Burmese Prime Minister Gen Thein Sein and other ministers are constantly featured in news reports, meeting with survivors and distributing food and water.

However, there is no sign of Than Shwe and his top two generals. As head of state, Than Shwe has not even responded to world leaders who sent messages of condolences to the people of Burma.

The Irawaddy: In her dilapidated home in Rangoon's Wartayar district, Ma Oo, a food vendor, described how she recited Than Buddhe rhymes to her eight year-old son and five year-old daughter to comfort them.

She heard cries of help and ran outside, taking the children?-just in time to see their home collapse before their eyes. A neighbor, Ma Kyin Ngwe, called them over to her own ruined home, and they hugged the ground as the wind sent pots, pans and furniture flying around them.

There was no escape from the fury of the storm. Wartayar is a raw, treeless place, accommodating people made homeless by a disastrous fire in Rangoon's Hlaing Township.

Hello, Kayyam

Thank you for starting this thread.

Is it the first on this forum about the current Burma disaster?

My heart goes out to the suffering Burmese people. This is now day 5 (in my part of the world) since the cyclone & to see so little of the urgently needed help, offered by the international community, actually reaching those who so desperately need it is very sad indeed.

Words cannot describe my feelings toward the Burmese "leaders" who apparently have put their own interests above the urgent needs of their own people. This is a truly tragic situation.
