[resolved] WHAT THE . . .

I've been having some pretty irritating problems this morning, so i thought i'd ask for some help. I keep getting timed out, and cannot keep my connection to this site. But i don't know if it is this site, the ISP servers, or the browser. We use Firefox, which is, in my never humble opinion, always a problem with "timing you out" while you're trying to load a page. At the same time, when i finally got into this site, i got that odd "word processor" view of the pages which i have seen when site maintenance is being performed.

So, if there is some site maintenance going on, it would help me to know that. If this was announced and i missed it . . . eh . . . so sue me. If it is the ISP, there's really not much i can do, because the ISP program installed on this computer says that it is performing properly--and we all know that corporations who sell us things never, ever lie.

If it is the Firefox browser, i'd appreciate it if anyone can tell me how to adjust the "time out" setting for Firefox. This is making me crazy, and it's not as though i needed any help with that.

All I can tell you is that it isn't the site. Everything looks normal to me.

Good luck!

Set
Set, have you been beating up your computer again? Be nice to it and it might be nice to you.

I've been doing some standard trouble-shooting moves, and attempting other things with the browser, and with IE. I've come to the conclusion that the problem lies with the ISP servers, and that is something i can do nothing about. I called them, and actually spoke to a real live human being, who assured me that there is no problem with their servers, that they never have server problems, and that i'm probably just a godless commie.

Well, that clears up a lot of things . . .

You found the cause. Computers hate godless commies.

Is this godless commie season?

There seems to be a spate of McCarthyism on the site.

Is it a full moon?

Your machine is, no doubt embarrased at your language, so its trying to distance itself by timing out

Thats my story and Im stickin with it.

I was getting a lot of "time outs" last night. (But then, that's what you get for bad behaviour...)

Seems okay today.

There was something goofy with the ISP last night, but I've never had a problem with timing out here.

Which is odd, since Set and I are using the same puter and ISP.

Shocked

You used to get timed out if you logged in and did not select the automatic log in option. Is that a maybe?

I don't think so, Roger. I shut the computer down for quite a while, and then The Girl started it up and went online, and we take turns logging in and out, so the automatic log-in function is not enabled.

My trouble shooting investigation consisted of trying to access several different types of site with Firefox, and then with IE. I had the same problems without reference to the browser i was using, and i came to the conclusion it was a problem with the ISP.

Yesterday or perhaps day before (I don't have a photographic memory) when I came to a2k, all I could get was a blank page. With some persistence, I managed to get in. It was the only regular site I visit that did this way.

That could also be the style sheet not loading on your computer. That's a transient-type of problem that usually resolves itself. As for the rest of it, helfino.
