Canfor Cuts in BC

Shift cuts and four-day work weeks have been announced for some of Canfor's northern BC mills. According to a report by the Prince George Citizen, the company confirmed it will be implementing two shifts from three at its P.G. Sawmill, while its Clear Lake finger-joint lumber facility will be cut back from two shifts to one. Roughly 100 employees will be impacted by these decisions.

Four-day work weeks have been announced for Canfor's Rustad Bros, Clear Lake, Mackenzie, Fort St. John, Quesnel and Houston facilities, all in BC, as well as the company's Grand Prairie mill in Alberta.

The Citizen confirmed the cutbacks translate to the removal of 600 million board feet of production, or the equivalent of two large sawmills.

It's very difficult times and very difficult decisions, but they are being made to sustain the business and provide us with the opportunity to come out the back side of this in a strong position, the Prince George Citizen reported Mark Feldinger, vice-president of manufacturing as saying.

housing statrs in the united states - from MSNBC , 18 march 2008 :

Quote:
Compared to a year ago, housing starts were down 28.4 percent. But for single-family homes, starts were off 40.5 percent from a year ago - the largest year-over-year drop since January 1991 when they fell by 45.1 percent.

and from BUSINESSWEEK october 2007 :

it looks like it will be quite some time before canadian lumber operators will be operating anywhere near capacity - even more layoffs are likely to happen .

and a/t some business people being interviewed on CNBC this morning , it will be 2010 before they expect business to pick up again .

some luxury goods store owners said that they'll be selling off most of their inventory before re-ordering !

i think it'll be a long wait - and very unpleasant one - for many people (notice the food riots that are starting to break out in some countries ?) .
wish i had better and happier news on this subject .
