Florida forest products company Rayonier Inc. said it's completed its purchase of 56,300 acres of timberland in Pacific County in Southwest Washington for $213.4 million.

The Jacksonville-based company (NYSE: RYN) paid Sierra Pacific Industries $3,790 per acre for the land, which is estimated to have 319 million board feet of merchantable timber. Rayonier said it now owns 426,000 acres in Washington.

"We have significantly increased our merchantable timber and have achieved greater scale in the Northwest," said Lee Thomas, Rayonier chairman, president and CEO, in a statement.

AHHH, Its probably just fir and pine. When I go to the lumberyard, they wanna sell me this crap thats all checked and gouged up and half of the damn boards they call "select" are cupped so badly that if you plane em down, they are about 5mm thick.

Gimme figured maple and Ill build you a table that will last for millenia.

I'm planting some maple this year FM. I'll give you a shout in about 50 years.

We get pinus radiata here (substantially modified monterey pine). It twists and cups as you say which is a result of poor/fast proceessing. Its full of dead knots which fall out and is soft as a babies bottom.

We refer to radiata as pinus crapita. Only fit for pallets and bed slats in my opinion.

Aust has some of the best hardwoods in the world but we haven't been able to take advantage of them.

what are some of you reccomended hardwoods?

I do a lot of cabinet work and have helped construct an oak and ash beam barn with some of my AMish neighbors. Ive learned the difference between working green v seasoned beams for construction.

Do you have a good dimensional hardwood similar to oak/ash/hickory?

I love talkin about wood. I get a "woody". My idea of porn is a woodworkers catalog

Currently we're pushing sugar gum (Eucalyptus cladocalyx). to clients. Its an excellent substitute for meranti, merbu and other "rainforest" decking timbers.

A good low rainfall forestry prospect that returns about $aud 400/ per cube processed and profiled. The 30 year turnaround is a bit daunting though.

Other timbers: red gum X hybrids. E. camaldulensis crossed with several other types. Heavy and hard as hell makes really good railway sleepers. Selected timber is used for some of the finest/solidest cabinetry.

Really the list is endless but your problem would be getting your hands on any Australian timber. There are specialist timber stockists but its the sort of thing you would want to pick up and stroke (you know what i mean) before you buy.

Once you've stroked Australian hardwood you wont go back.
