Gimme figured maple and Ill build you a table that will last for millenia.
I'm planting some maple this year FM. I'll give you a shout in about 50 years.
We get pinus radiata here (substantially modified monterey pine). It twists and cups as you say which is a result of poor/fast proceessing. Its full of dead knots which fall out and is soft as a babies bottom.
We refer to radiata as pinus crapita. Only fit for pallets and bed slats in my opinion.
Aust has some of the best hardwoods in the world but we haven't been able to take advantage of them.
