Animal Planet had a little interesting tidbit about this earlier today, and Im just thrilled to find that its right here in Massachusetts...Deerfield. Im thinking rolls of film and a road trip are in order even.

The interesting thing on AP was that one of the scientists there actually repairs the wings of those butterflies in need of it through loosing or breaking a wing off. They take part of a departed butterfly and glue its wing to the needed patients wing, and voila! crazy looking butterfly but, able to keep flitting about.

They have a great deal of types, sizes and colors, very very nice to see.

I enjoyed looking at the website so, I thought others might also.
Enjoy:

and they do birthday parties!

very cool

there is a butterfly garden near here as well - close to one of the migration points in south-western ontario. I've gone to butterfly migration weekends near home - they band their little legs with scotch tape! I've been tempted to volunteer for the count and banding but i'm afraid i'm a bit too klutzy.

Hey, the Franklin zoo has a butterfly house that is a seasonal display. Not sure when it starts up, but you walk through and hang with the wildlife....

Ive driven by that zoo many a times.
I think having such a large variety in one small place would be amazing.

When I lived in NY we would go there a couple of times a year. I particularly loved the bird house, and the proboscis monkeys!

Cute..they are funny looking monkeys, arent they?
I went to the Providence Zoo last year and really liked their Polar Bears but, so many animals...you just cant make one a favorite, can you?
Okay, so the DC zoo and Pandas was a top stop for me for years, so I can understand the favorites.

Walter..that looks simply lovely..thanks for sharing!! Loved the sound included on the website, and thought..jeesh..those butterflies would be unusual to me, I guess the web site is more geared toward the locals.

Not in a conservatory, but in their natural habitat in Mexico for the winter months: do you remember when there was a killing freeze and folks were frightened that all, or most of, the Monarch butterflies were wiped out? I read somewhere that some did survive as they were underneath the bodies of their cousins. I suppose that followup research is being done to assess the extent of the loss.
