This one boggled us at work! There are 3 Hikers, the want a room to freshen up from hiking. They go to a hotel and the Inn keeper tells them there is one room left for $30 with 3 beds. Its perfect so they each pay $10 for it. After going up to the room, the Inn keeper realized that he charged them wrong and the room is actually $25. He pulls out 5 dollars and tells the bell hop to take the change up to them. The bell-hop decided that he would make some money on the deal and keeps $2 for himself, and gives each man $1 back. Now: The question is each man now only payed $9 each and the bell hop kept $2. 3x9=$27 + $2 from the bell hop where did the other $1 form the $30 go?
hikers pay 30$ bell hop gets given 5$ of the 30.... bell hop pockets 2$ and gives each hiker back 1$.... 3*1$ =3$ plus the 2 in the bell boys pocket=30$
Ultimately the 3 hikers played 9 each (25 + the 2 the bellhop pocketed).
The trick here is you don't add in the 2 the bellhop kept you add in the 3 they saved to make up the 30.
$27 was paid
+ $3 was refunded
+ $2 bellhop made
- $2 hotel lost
= $30
OR
One of them got lost on the hiking trip so only 2 came back. They got the same room and each paid $15 for it. The clerk, a little absent-minded, again made the mistake. He sent $5 up with the thieving bellhop. The rascal keeps $3 this time and refunds each $1. They now paid $14 each for a total of $28. The bellhop has $3, so the total is $31. There's your missing dollar!
