The fragile new state of East Timor has had a rocky road since achieving independence.
Yesterday, in an apparent coup attempt, its President, Ramos Horta, was seriously wounded and is currently receiving medical aid in Darwin, Australia.

The Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) says East Timor President Jose Ramos Horta still has a bullet fragment in his body and is in a serious but stable condition.
Mr Ramos Horta is in the hospital's intensive care unit after he was shot at his home in Dili during a botched coup attempt by fugitive rebel leader Alfredo Reinado.
East Timor Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, who was also attacked but escaped unharmed, has confirmed that Reinado was shot dead during the raid.
Mr Ramos Horta was sedated and stabilised on the flight from Dili to Darwin.
Mr Ramos Horta arrived on a Careflight plane and was driven under police escort to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Also with him on the flight was his sister, Rosa Karrascalao, and it is also understood his mother is in Darwin.
RDH superintendent Len Notaras says it appears the President has three bullet wounds, one to the stomach and two to the chest area.....
