I had this quote floating around in my head.. Famous quote, historical quote.
It was, "We are all [something]".
With [something] being an oppressed or persecuted group. Jews, blacks, something. You know, as a statement of solidarity.
So as I was tasting what it was I was looking for, I realised it was also, or originally, French. "Nous sommes tous des.."
OK, so after 15 minutes of Googling, I know now that it's "Nous sommes tous des juifs". Or in another version, "after Auschwitz we are all Jews".
Except that it's still not quite clear to me what the original quote was, or what context it was used in. It seems like it has come around and gone around a coupla times?
It seems like Sartre wrote it (first?), as in, "after Auschwitz". But it was also chanted in the streets during the 1968 rebellion in France, I'm not quite sure in what context. And it seems to be randomly used in speeches and articles now in different contexts.
In short, can anyone tell me more about this? Because I'm kind of confused still...
I thought it was from Northern Exposure when Joel marches with the Native Americans.... :wink:

Back in May 1968 rebellion, is was shouted by the students after the nasty comments of the communist newspaper L'Humanité, describing, in a very derogatory way, Daniel Cohen-Bendit, one of the students leaders, as a German Jew.

I like to think I'd have died on the way there - would've started **** and gotten shot or kicked to death. The overlying theme - maybe in the sense that now we've all got to watch our stuff is quite valid.
