Ok. There were these 3 guys, and they decide one to order some coffee at a coffee shop. The waitress tells them that 3 coffee's costs $3.00. So they each pay 1 dollar each. The waitress returns shortly after saying that it actually only costs $2.50 for the coffees. "OK, because you can't split 50 cents between 3 people, just give us 10 cents each back and you take the 20 cents as a tip." She does this and the men enjoy their coffee. BUt there is something wrong with what just happened. Ok, The three men each spent $1.00 but then got 10 cents back so they would have all spent 90 cents right? Ok so 90 cents x 3 equals $2.70 and the waitress had 20 cents so that equals $2.90... Where did the 10 cents go??
HOW DOES THIS WORK
Re: This doesnt make any sense i need someone to explain
Huh? It didn't "go" anywhere.
1. Each guy pays the waitress $1.
2. The waitress has $3.
Guys: $0.00 + Waitress: $3.00 = $3.00
3. She comes back and says the coffee only cost $2.50.
4. The guys ask for 10 cents each back.
5. She gives each guy 10 cents.
6. She now has $2.70.
Guys: $0.30 + Waitress: £2.70 = $3.00
7. She pays $2.50 into the cash register. (or puts it one one side, or writes it in her little notebook)
8. She has 20 cents left for her tip.
Guys: $0.30 + Waitress: $.20 + Cash register: $2.50 = $3.00
The guys got 10 cents back and a cup of coffee that cost 83.33 cents and they each paid 6.66 cents as a tip, which adds up to £1.00.

Oh sh*t!!!
OK I hit the £ key, (more than once!!) and it adds up to $0.9999999999999999999 really
No, it adds up to 0.50615 £..
Exchange rate as of today : $1.00 = £0.50615.
comme tu me fais chier dans mes pantalons, Francis !
Hier soir j'ai vu "L'auberge rouge", (remake avec Gérard Jugnot). Super bon !

Bah ouais, pas loin du tout ...
My reply to the Op, re-written without £ signs
Huh? It didn't "go" anywhere.
1. Each guy pays the waitress $1.
2. The waitress has $3.
3 guys: $0.00 + waitress: $3.00 = $3.00
3. She comes back and says the coffee only cost $2.50. What to do with the 50 cents?
4. The 3 guys ask for 10 cents each back, and tell her to take 20 cents tip.
5. She gives each guy 10 cents. Think of it as 3 dimes if you like.
6. She now has $2.70. (Waitresses often carry change around with them)
3 guys: $0.30 + waitress: $2.70 = $3.00
7. She pays $2.50 into the cash register. (or puts it one one side, or writes it in her little notebook)
8. She has 20 cents left for her tip.
3 guys: $0.30 + waitress: $0.20 + cash register: $2.50 = $3.00
The guys got 10 cents back and a cup of coffee that cost 83.3333 cents and they each paid 6.6666 cents as a tip, which adds up to 99.9999 cents, or $1.00 really. (Like they said, you can't divide 50 cents in three physically.)
What the problem gives you is two separate calculations.
The first calculation is (1.00 x 3)-.30-.20 = 2.50
Second one is (.90 x 3)+.20 = 2.90
Basically if the guys paid 90 cents each, that already included that 20 cent tip. What the 2 calculation is doing, is adding the waitress' tip again, instead of adding the 30 cents that the men got back, to confuse you.
At least thats how i see it.
