"Left Behind" a Myth?

Reply Fri 4 Jan, 2008 02:57 am
Anyone here seen the movie "Left Behind"? It made a pretty big impact on the doctrine of the Rapture.

This vid says it's a myth and based on a misinterpretation of scripture:

Agree or disagree?

I have read almost all of the books in the series and I have seen three of the movies. There is some Biblical basis in the books and in the movies. But, Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins have said this is only a possible scenario, from what I understand. I'll see what I can find on that because I am not 100% sure that is exactly what they said.

I really enjoyed reading the books and the movies were pretty good. The books were interesting and pretty action packed without the sex and vulgarity. But I would not take them as a literal translation of the events of the Book of Revelation.

Here is an excerpt from a interview done with Jerry B. Jenkins:
People are looking for something beyond themselves, and when they hear of fiction based on Bible prophecy, it fuels that hunger. They read out of curiosity, and then, if the fiction works fundamentally, they get hooked. http://www.faithfulreader.com/authors/au-jenkins-jerry.asp
The books are .......fiction based on prophecy.

When it comes to the rapture, many seem unable to explain Proverbs 2: 21, 22:
"For the upright are the ones that will reside in the earth, and the blameless are the ones that will be left over in it. 22 As regards the wicked, they will be cut off from the very earth; and as for the treacherous, they will be torn away from it."

I once took a Bible Class in the Book of Revalation taught by a devout Southern Baptist. He pretty much toed the line laid down in the Left Behind books. Sometimes the reasoning was straight forward, and sometimes assumptions and leaps of faith were needed.

I do not worry very much on the subject. About 20 years ago I heard a sermon that went along these lines. "Today, about 100,000 people worldwide will die of natural causes. For each of them, today is the end of the world. The chances are each of us will die from natural causes instead of living in the events described in Revalation."

That made sense to me when I first heard it, and it still makes sense today.

anton has got the right of it.
There are both films and books that are based on true stories. But these are not among them.

I'm not sure it even has the anthropological merit to be a myth - looks like something you get with your $1,500 pledge to a televangelist. That said, there's a touch of literary merit of you don't take it literally.

I don't buy the eternal bliss thing - even in a film made by folks who do it sounds like a ruse. So, survival horror - it borders on beautiful here, the innocent die instantly, only the knowledgeable and the wicked remain. Great set up, horrible execution. I wish George Romero would make a movie about it.

I was impressed to see so many of you not believing in it. From what I know there's a huge number of Christians who do believe it. I loved the video because it was so accurate.

Why cant people see that??

I was just in another forum and they had a whole section there devoted to the Rapture...

I know why people insist on believing in it, because it produces a FALSE second chance, where ppl can live how they want and then have 7 years chance to fix things us... it's comforting i guess.

A false second chance? Why do you say false second chance?

Live like they want? Hardly. Those left behind at the rapture are going to go through a horrible time. So you don't get to live like you want and get away with it.

I do believe there will be a rapture of God's church. But do I believe it's going to be exactly as these fictional books claim? No one knows exactly how it is going to be. There are some basics that I think are pretty universally accepted (by those that believe) but I don't believe anyone knows all the actual events.

Street's Reply: And, I guess you can go so far as to say that even life and God's Word are myths. Believe nothing, all of existence is just a mirage, and even God does not exist. We're it, and we are just mirages too. Ohhhh, such a bad bad dream. Woe is me. Where is my doctor. Crying or Very sad

Here I am little one. Cool The Great Physician, God. See, no myth, and such a cool God. He wears sun glasses. Does that tell you anything. Yup, he dwelleth in Heaven, the Sun.

Whenever you want to see where God dwells, just look up oh so briefly at the Sun, our light. At night, you can even see the suns of his Brethren, polygamists going forth and replenishish the worlds of their creation. What do you know, one Father of us all and millions of mothers.

Oh my God! That's POLYGAMY! The whole gist of the FLDS Church is isolation from the World and a rapture, to be lifted up into heaven. That is the whole purpose of the doctrine preached to us since I wore diapers, and yes it is most scriptural. But it will never happen to any who have not come out of the world. The rapture is the finale of coming out of the world. You must first do it literally in your living on earth: No tv, no magazines, no worldly dress or vices. That comes first, very FLDS style. As Christ always taught in Jerusalem, no unclean thing can go where God is, because He is spirit and putting off the world is putting off the gross elements and becoming spirit. "For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness (I Thess. 4:7).

The Rapture: I Thess. 4:17, Rev.14:15.

Yea but when a person has a hope that they can do whatever they want and not worry becaue they'll be getting a second chance that's unlogical and according to the Bible, not gonna happen!

If people believe they'll have a second chance to "fix things up" they indirectly get the message that they can do what they want now and worry about it later... it doesnt matter which way you look at it, that's the inevetable outcome.

I would not dignify "Left Behind" with the label, myth. It is clearly no more than a scam.

Yeah, but it has vast appeal, and is great for the people who are marketing that concept.

I have this lovely piece of land a bit to the south of Homestead Florida!!! Laughing
