Okay, I admit it, I'm out of date and old fashioned when it comes to music. I still listen to FM broadcast radio, cassette tapes and CDs. What's last.fm, is it a internet radio streaming service?

Sorta but more than that. You can type any band name in a search field and find information about it (Wikis maintained by Last.fm users), his discography; you can listen to bits of its songs, and sometimes whole songs; you can leave comments and talk with fans; you can see what related artists you may be interested in if you like this one --

but by far the most useful part is the "Related artists radio". Click it and you hear one full song by that band and then an ongoing stream of other bands that people who like this one play a lot.

How that works is that if you download this little gadget, Last.fm will "scrobble" all the tracks you play if you're playing CDs or MP3s on your computer or listening to Last.fm radio, and keep track of the data. It creates charts of the tracks and bands you've listened to most, and it's based on that kind of info from millions of users that they determine that "related artists" feature.

While listening, you can also "heart" tracks or tag them with keywords, and if you're a paid subscriber that gets you the extra option of playing a stream of all the tracks you've hearted or tagged with a certain keyword.

I'm sure there's more still... it's pretty cool!

@nimh,
What username do you go by on last.fm (if you don't mind sharing)? I just set up a new account to try to find recommendations (so far I'm not a fan, seems to work on the artist level and that's not atomic enough for my kind of listening), you can find me there under robertgentel (or through the widgets on my profile).

@Robert Gentel,
Hey - I've added you as friend now.

My computer clock is kaduk, so Last.fm doesn't scrobble the MP3s and CDs I play anymore - long time already. Hence the scarce tracks on my profile... it only scrobbles tracks now when I listen to streams within Last.Fm.

I dont really use the Recommended radio ... I think my taste confounds them ;-). When I use Last.fm now, I usually do so by typing in the name of a band I feel like listening to, and then clicking the Related artists feed. That seems to work well, gets me lots of music like what I wanted to listen to, some I know some I dont.

Depending on how well known the band is, though, the feed loses quality over time... I think that the longer you listen, the wider the net gets cast, and if it was an obscure band in the first place things go a bit haywire after a while.
