Are these too weird to write about in a book on life?

THOUGHTS ON THINGS from a collection of 235

3. Maybe people don't like to apologize because they don't like to think they hurt people's feelings….maybe that's why they get mad when being forced to apologize. When we are kids, some of us are taught to think it's the end of the world if someone gets upset at us or if we hurt them slightly. What we do when we "overguilt" them by making them feel worse than they have to (by overexaggerating how bad the other person feels) is make them afraid to apologize because they are afraid of thinking that they could have hurt someone THAT much.

8. Isn't loving someone only because they are "your" child kind of like saying you only love yourself? I mean, if you only love them because they are YOURS, and not love them for themselves is that really loving them for the right reasons??

12. The US can't be right just because it's the US. Since US's actions have no bearing on the supposedly set standards of right and wrong, then anybody who thinks that literally has no morals: whatever the US does, no matter how it relates to existing morals, is right! And if the people who tend to peddle these theories really believe anything the US does is right, then why do they fret about the wrong people getting elected? It won't be "wrong" if the US does it!

14. The very nature of laws, being made by humans for humans to follow, cannot be infallible- there are good laws as opposed to illogical, unfair, or oppressive laws, but the nature of law itself is less of a statement of "You can't do this," as much as it is a statement of "If you do this, we'll do that,"- it is technically a threat. Also, if people in general are fallible and need laws and guidance, then how do you know the lawmakers are trustable?

23. Why do they put gender on ID cards and the like? Identifying you with 50% of other people is going to help that much. BTW, if it is for identification, then why put M for Michael Jackson, if he doesn't look like one?

27. You can't get mad at a person for "hurting themselves" or making the "wrong decision" because isn't the entity making the decision the self also? Who's to decide which ?'self' is valid? Also, there is no such thing as the ?'wrong' decision- it is the person's opinion whether or not the outcome is desirable.

32. It is important to give someone innocence until proven guilty- it is not to be "nice" or "right" or "fair"- it is just rational and is important to be observed for both the prisoner's and the authority's benefit! The prisoner gets a fair trial and the authorities are able to find the real perpetrators. Also torture only gets people to "admit" something just to stop the torture.

41. Why do people, especially when talking about things like the Holocaust, get more upset about the unimportant details of the events (i.e. swastika use, Nazi salutes, etc.) and therefore get more upset by a bunch of punk loving Nazi skinheads in the basement than they do about REAL POLITICAL Nazis and real neo-totalitarians? Isn't it more respectful to the victims to make less of a chance for it to happen again by having realistic and not symbolic enemies?

44. Intelligent people are usually the ones with problems or are anti-social: they are intelligent enough to realize many of the problems of society- whether they realize it or not- and they are merely reacting to the negative aspects negatively- and they look "crazy" merely because they are not like everybody else.

48. Do I think my beliefs are right because I believe them……or is that WHY I believe them?

49. How is there any real gauge of "pain tolerance"? If you can tolerate it, then how can it be called pain? It's a philosophical concept anyway, not a medical one.

50. People assume that when people say "Don't go to war" that they mean a certain country like the USA- when I say don't go to war I mean the whole world. Soldiers from every country should resist- there will be no imbalance of one country having no soldiers and wars will only get less bloody and we may be forced to solve problems the grown up way again.

51. It cannot be an "opinion" to say that all women are emotional or the like- it is, at best, a theory- it can, in reality, be proven right or wrong. Even if we don't have the stats, it isn't non-provable in itself. So there is no "that's just my opinion" defense.

52. It is foolish to be proud of your country because you didn't choose to be born there and because people are (supposedly) objective about morals.

53. For that matter, what does being born in a country have to do with loyalty to it? You could have been transported to a concentration camp in a foreign country and your kid who was born there forced to have citizenship there.

76. It is NOT okay for a parent to do something to a child without their consent because the freedom parents talk about does not include the freedom to take away someone else's freedom (like circumcision or spanking). Didn't slave owners use the same "I can do what I want with my property" excuse?

82.
1. You can't say GM isn't marriage because what they are doing is the exact same thing as straights- anti-gays wouldn't be mad if gays weren't trying to do the same thing as straights. There would be no mention if they weren't trying to create the same exact thing except for the sexes of the partners.
2. Second of all, you don't necessarily marry someone's private parts- you may want to marry their soul- the id, ego, and super-ego, whatever.
Is this telling me that I'm supposed to be attracted to someone's BODY? Sounds pretty naughty and sexual and non-spiritual to me….All in all, the only difference between gays and straights marrying is who the partners are- the thing they are doing is not different.

104. Why do there seem to be laws or at least rules about insulting a leader or politician- do they get offended more? It's not like the insult itself is threatening.

105. For that matter, why are stars and rich people entitled to more security if they can afford it- and you can't use the excuse that they are officials because Bill Clinton still has them….. One could say it's because they are well known, but it's not fair that they deserve protection just if they can afford it.

106. If we need ultra high-tech mechanisms to notice if our employees are on drugs, then what does it matter?

112. How is it saintly to suffer (dying of cancer) in some cases but sinful to hurt yourself (being on drugs) in others?

114. If it really is human nature to just want to better yourself and no one else, then how come a white person would hate to have a person challenge his wealth or power or even get a few rights just because he's black? Wouldn't it make sense just to hate everyone else equally rather than pay that much attention to race and sex?

131. Should someone who looks black but is not get affirmative action? What about someone who is black but looks white? What if they weren't discriminated against because they didn't look black enough? What if they looked black but STILL weren't discriminated against?

182. Why do kids who drink think they are being adult….well, if drinking is for adults only, then what are they supposed to think…….?

195. How is it that sometimes we teach kids to do the opposite of what they would do as adults (such as teaching them not to have sex), but other times we encourage them to act grownup (especially) at times when it's not necessary (such as sitting still in church- there's plenty of time to perfect that as a kid grows up).

196. If children always seem to follow what their parents believe, then where did the parents get their morals- aren't future generation good enough to make their own decisions? Even if adults aren't expected to follow their parents' beliefs, if they formed all their theories while children under their parents' watch then they won't learn anything new. Are new generations, whether adults or children, supposed to get inherently stupider as time progresses or what?

213. What's worse: A Holocaust revisionist who is deeply hurt by what happened, whether or not it happened to 100 or 6 million people; or a person who fully accepts to current statistics and doesn't feel sorry at all?

214. Why do we consider it worse to kill a police officer than an UNARMED CITIZEN? It's more likely that they guy who killed a cop felt threatened, so, to make a blanket statement, it should be LESS shocking.

225. It is incorrect for an authority to simultaneously claim ideological reasons for forcing someone to change and threatening physical force. It says simultaneously, "Do what I'm telling you to do because it's right for all these reasons, and also because I'll kick your ass if you don't do it…." The person being told what to do forgets that there are moral reasons and only follows rules to ward off punishment, therefore giving them no independent moral compass in their actions.

238. If drug addicts should be punished for hurting themselves, then why don't people scream for anorexics to be put in jail?

And some extras:

*How can a kid avoid alcohol until he's 21 because he "knows" he may get hurt (because he doesn't "know" how to use alcohol), but after that still be considered too young to drink? How can you be aware of your own "unawareness"?

*What would happen if a transvestite man got married to a transvestite woman and they both put down the opposite gender of how they were raised- would they be able to get married, but be forced to "put the right gender" correspondingly? If an official's answer would be no, then that would prove that the state is forcing people to identify with the "right" sex and not to make it heterosexual.

*Why aren't minors allowed to buy cough drugs if they can buy vanilla (35% alcohol)?

*Analyze- should a 29 year old who has been in a coma for 15 years be able to drink or vote?

Cassandra, welcome to A2K. You would probably get a better response if you posted each question separately, but I'll take a stab at the whole list.

3. We force kids to apologize when they've hurt someone because the act of apologizing makes them acknowledge the victim's feelings and helps them develop empathy. Kids may not be not mature enough to initiate the apology on their own, especially if they try to rationalize their own actions and deny the victim's pain to make themselves feel better. Also, the humiliation of having to apologize may make the transgressor think twice before repeating the offense.

8. We love our "own" children because we are programmed to do so in order to perpetuate our own genes (it doesn't matter whether the children are biological or adopted, the emotional response is innate). Fortunately we love children in spite of themselves, or the human race would have ended long ago.

12. We who live in the US think it is "right" because the majority of its citizens are moral (surely you've heard of the Moral Majority?) and if the decisions made by elected officials reflect the wishes of the populace, they are therefore moral as well. If a president of the immoral ilk was able to con the majority and be elected, his decisions could put the US in the "wrong." We certainly would not want a president elected by a minority of the people!

14. Who ever said that lawmakers are trustable? It is the people's responsibility to force lawmakers to rescind bad laws, even those made with good intentions.

23. The metrics on ID cards help prevent fraud. Weight, eye and hair color can change, height is hard to judge accurately if you are seated in a car, but gender is usually easy to determine (with some exceptions) and eliminates about half of the people who might try to use a stolen card.

27. Anyone can make a judgment about your decisions and get mad at you if they think you've made a stupid one, especially those who have made bad ones themselves and don't want to see you suffer the same consequences.

32. Agreed.

41. Why would anyone use the symbols unless they either agreed with Nazi policies or wanted to trivialized the suffering of the victims?

44. Truly intelligent people can learn to socialize when necessary and find ways to deal with their own problems and those of society.

45. I hope that you believe in them because you have logically evaluated the evidence for and against them and they appear to be correct based on your current knowledge, but are open-minded enough to acknowledge that even your most cherished beliefs may someday be proven wrong.

49. Pain tolerance is a medical concept and must be evaluated in order to avoid over- or under-medicating patients, particularly those who are unable to tell you that they are in pain (see "pain scales" at http://painconsortium.nih.gov/pain_scales/index.html). You are very fortunate (or very young) if you have never had to find out just how much pain you can tolerate.

50. Yeah, it would be nice if soldiers agreed not to fight. But they usually don't have that choice (see "Christmas Truce" at http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/truce.asp )

51. It is a stereotype to say that all women are "emotional" and is factually wrong. It is an opinion to say that you think that women in general are more emotional than men, presumably based on your own possibly-biased observations.

52 and 53. Being proud of and loyal to your our own family group/tribe/school/country/whatever is a biological and social adaptation that enhances individual and group survival. What's foolish about that?

76. Parents do not need a child's consent for anything because children's brains do not fully develop their judgmental capacity until the late teens and they do not have the experience to know what's best for them or the emotional maturity to choose long term benefits over immediate gratification. Certainly some parents make very bad decisions and harm their kids, but society generally acknowledges the rights of parents to raise kids as they see fit. Nobody has any "rights" other than those they have the power to impose on others or that are granted and enforced by their fellow human beings.

82. The definition of "marriage" varies with culture and individual beliefs. You can say whatever you like about it but will find it hard to convince those who believe otherwise.

104. Insults threaten the authority and power of politicians, who ultimately are answerable to the people. Insults can lead to physical threats and there is always the possibility of assassination.

105. Famous people are more likely to be targets. Why shouldn't those who can afford protection get it?

106. Drugs tests are for proof so that users can be helped or fired before their impairment harms someone else.

112. I don't think that it is saintly to suffer and IMO any religion that encourages needless suffering is unethical. Hurting yourself is not sinful but really, really, really stupid.

114. It is human nature to want your own family/social group to benefit, not just yourself. Racial problems arise when we make judgments based on appearance and culture instead of individual worth.

115. Affirmative action was implemented with good intentions but had some unintended consequences. No one should get preferential treatment based on race, color, age, gender, or anything except ability to do the job.

182. Any kid who thinks that copying adult actions such as drinking, smoking, or sex makes them look grown-up isn't thinking logically. Does playing with kid's toys make anyone think that an adult is a child?

195. Sitting still in church is simply having the good manners not to distract those around you. Politeness is not just for grownups, but most grownups have learned what behavior is appropriate for the situation and practice it instead of being completely self-centered and doing whatever they want. Sex is never appropriate for children, and you will understand why when you are an adult (bet you hate hearing that!)

196. Each generation modifies the morals they got from their parents to suit their own environment, by changing laws or the behaviors that are condoned or punished (dress codes, kissing in public, manners). Societies that cannot change when needed do not survive.

213. Have you ever been to the Holocaust Museum?

214. Do you think that someone who would shoot an armed policeman is going to hesitate to shoot any unarmed citizen who gets in his way?

225. I think you will agree that imposing rules without justifying them is wrong. It would be nice if everyone did the right thing for moral reasons and the threat of force was unnecessary, but that's not the real world.

238. Anorexics do not hurt anyone else. Drug addicts often do. Drug addicts are not usually in jail for hurting themselves but for hurting society by stealing or committing other crimes such as supporting the illegal drug trade.

Extras: the ban on alcohol use by teenagers is based on lack of judgment, not lack of awareness.

I really don't care who marries whom or why. You just have to find a jurisdiction where it is legal.

You'd have to be a real idiot to drink vanilla, and apparently it is not abused as much as cough syrup. There are a lot of other things you can buy legally that are bad for you.

The 29-year-old's brain presumably kept developing physically even though s/he was in a coma. In any case, the law is based on easily-determined chronological age because it is very difficult to determine mental age.
