My money is still on a tree.

It multiplies from one (asexually or sexually); "male to female".

You don't want to crash into it (obviously).

And I have yet to find an inhabited area without some form of them.

Hmm, the answer "kids" does not work because of the male to female part: fetuses begin as female then either remain so or become male.

Perhaps the answer is "sperm."

I think tree was pretty close, but the rest of the riddle is better answered with flowers. They are meant for reproduction so they make many, and "in the mix" may refer to pollinating with other flowers around it. Asexual reproduction has been stated, and you should always stop to smell the roses. The last one is a bit weak, but I think it still works since flowers are visually very noticeable.

my first thought was yeast, mostly from the first lines, and also kinda the last one-all the baked goods and alcohol and whatnot around. I'm not sure about the male to female, but it can reproduce sexually and asexually, so the only one kind of tripping me up is the slow down bit.
