CHRISTMAS WHERE THE GUM TREES GROW
(Val Donlon / Lesley Sabogal)

Christmas where the gum trees grow
There is no frost and there is no snow
Christmas in Australia's hot
Cold and frosty is what its not
When the bloom of the Jackaranda tree is here
Christmas time is near

From England came our Christmas fare
They even said what Santa should wear
But here down under for summers cool
Santa should dip in a swimming pool

Santa rides in a sleigh on snow
But down here where the gum trees grow
Santa should wear some water ski's
And glide around Australia with ease

To ride around the bush where its dry
To cart all the presents piled so high
A red nosed reindeer would never do
Santa should jump on a kangaroo

Christmas where the gum trees grow
There is no frost and there is no snow
Christmas in Australia's hot
Cold and frosty is what its not
When the bloom of the Jackaranda tree is here
Christmas time is near

Drama group Christmas Barbie.

I thought those in the northern hemisphere would enjoy a little summer swim in the river.

For good food and wine, good friends and good fellowship we give thanks.

Yep, we just keep on giving away our natural resources.

Apparently blue gums a quite a noxiouse weed in some countries.

We can give as good as we get.

@dadpad,
Can you please help me? I would like to teach this song to my class here in France. Where / How do I find the music online?

Hey Diggers . . . even if you moved your Christmas to July, you'd still not have snow, or holly or mistletoe--is that not true?

Oh, and stop having so damned much fun . . . it's colder than a well digger's ass here, we had three inches of snow a couple of days ago, and we're expecting another five or six inches overnight and tomorrow.

May well have some snow near where dadpad lives in July!

Looking good in those antlers, dp!

Christmas is time for fun in the sun. Just can't understand why you nortamericanos and assorted europeans tolerate all that snow and stuff at Christmas time. Sheesh! Swimming'd be a bit if a challenge!

@margo,
Despite our situations in different sides of the equator, we in the Los Angeles area, well, we in particular at our house, often walked the beach on Christmas, since southern california weather is variable, what with famed santa ana winds that bring warming temps. And, the topper, gum trees grow there.

Why? We swim at Christmas. What's so strange about that?

Enjoyed your photographs, dadpad. (And the gum tree poem, of course! Smile )
Were they taken last Christmas, or perhaps more recently?

Here's wishing you and your family (& friends) a good Christmas break. You must be pretty tired after your extended heavy work stint! I hope that that stops for a bit now, so you can recuperate. Finally.

p.s ... Did your daughter finally find suitable accomodation in Melbourne?
