Well, not really. Laughing

My birdies have babies. !

Probably retarded ones as they are brother and sister.
Im not sure if that will effect their offspring though?
They are finches..

Will the babies of direct relatives survive?

They'll probably survive--genetic degeneracy doesn't necessarily pop up immediately. How do you know they're "brother and sister?" Did you purchase them?

No. They were the children of my friends birds.

They were just weaned when I got them.

I did not think that there would be an issue with their eggs, since they are not as much of a physically complex creature as humans....

but , I was not too sure either.

Im totally surprised though that they have babies Smile

I did not even know there were eggs in there!

Awww...I had two parakeets, both female, and one would lay a couple of eggs ever now and then. Obviously nothing ever came of it since there was no man about to fertilize them, but it was still neat to see them. Do you have any pics of the little peepers?

Im jumping through my skin wanting to photograph them, but I dont think I will.

i am willing to bet they JUST hatched not but a day or so ago.. so I dont want to scare the parents out of taking care of them.

Once they get some feathers, I will.

I did peek in there.. oh.my. they are tinnny

Their beak looks like two toothpick tips, and their body is no bigger then the very tip of my pinky.

Sooo little. Im so excited for some odd reason. Smile

When cleaning out the cage today, I saw at least 4 other eggs in there.

Is it a sanitary issue if they dont hatch?

Im sure the birds would throw it out by then, but if they dont and I have to clean it, does having my hands around the babies cause the parents to not take care of them as it does for wild birds?

Wearing clean gloves might solve that problem.

I understand that the "taint of human hands" has been overstated, possibly to stop adventurous children from handling eggs and nestlings.

Genetic defects from inbreeding are also overstated and inbreeding is extremely commonplace in nature. The problems usually arise over time when there is not enough genetic diversity over generations.

Congrats on the new boids, shewolf. Exciting. Give the remaining eggs some time. They might still hatch. They're generally laid every other day, and they hatch about that far apart.

I doubt that your hands will be a major deterrant to parenting. They're your pets, not wild birds. But if you feel uncomfortable about poking your paw into the cage, wait a while. First see if any more eggs hatch.

Thrilled. And mazel tov.

I do love wild birds.

If i could I would have several feeders in my yard, but I live in a small apartment building on the second floor.
My downstairs neighbors would hate to have all of that seed on their porch..
Not to mention the poop..

Early this morning, as the sun was coming up, I heard alot of 'squeaking'.

I walked out of my bedroom to see an early morning flight lesson, and all of the babies out of the house and on a perch.

They saw me, and raced back in..

Daddy is on the left, and those are the three babies. Smile
