Ukraine's President Victor Yushchenko thinks it's reasonable to expedite decision-making on deployment of new types of reactors, in particular Canadian CANDU, at the country's nuclear power plants to "improve energy and ecological security of the state".

Ukraine is resuming talks with Canadian companies on the construction of CANDU (Canada Deuterium Uranium) nuclear reactors in Ukraine. One of the main aims is to ensure Ukraine's "uranium independence." Ukraine has its own uranium raw materials, but it is forced to enrich them abroad. CANDU reactors use natural uranium.

The politicians, however, are not telling the whole story: the uranium problem is not quite so straightforward. What is surprising, though, is that the CANDU reactor, developed at the dawn of the nuclear energy era. One would think Ukraine would have developed a distaster for anything associated with that past tragedy.

Isn't it weird? I've got an impression that Ukrainian president is either a madcap or corrupt official. What's the sense deploying morally obsolete Canadian CANDUs in Ukraine? Not a single more or less advanced country would dare deploying these! Even more needy Asian countries preferred not to use CANDUs because of their unreliability of service! Looks like that president Yushchenko simply took a bribe for choosing unsafe CANDUs rather than highly reliable nuclear reactors made in France or Russia. Or, perhaps, Yushchenko was once again too weak-willed to obey his American wife Katherine? I think that Washington would surely not want France or Russia to get a profitable contract. As for Yushchenko, he doesn't seem to care for he's got his money. He doesn't care that one fine day Ukraine may turn into second Chernobyl that would certainly affect Europe along with it.
