Heya, I'm 18 years old and I've lived in the USA all my life. Really been thinking about moving to Australia for multiple reasons. I've got a few questions for you guys who do live there now, how are the colleges? Are jobs for an 18 year old similar to how it is in America? Just wondering if i'm gonna be able to find work or not. Also, how hard would it be to obtain citizenship there? If I do move there I plan to never come back to America. Not very knowledgable on all this yet Razz trying to figure it out! Any replys are very very much appreciated Very Happy thanks!

You'd need a visa - and I'm not sure just how to go about that, but...the info should all be here: Department of Immigration Australia <click>

That's a start, anyway.

Suggestion: Why not try a working holiday first? Then you can decide whether you want to make the big move or not.
So many folk post here about wanting to migrate to Oz (check out many threads in the "Australia" forum here. You'll pick up a lot of the information you're interested in, too.), often with very little idea of what the country is actually like.
You never know, you could either love or hate the place. Or something in between! Very Happy
Please don't think I'm not trying to put you off. Honestly, I'm not.

So I guess next you'll be trying to figure out which part of Oz to use as your base, shedwig? It's a BIG, spread out place!

Big city? The country? Outback? Rural centre?
What appeals to you?

Ask away if you want feedback.

(Wise move, the visit before the decision. It won't feel like such a huge move & you'll be able to relax & explore at your own pace.)

Ive been doing lots of reasearch as that's where im moving to in April (melbourne). My partner has gone over so ill have to go too.

Best bet is to apply for a holliday working visa, easy to get and they last for 12months. You can then get a sponsor from an employer when you are their and then apply for a 4yr sponsor visa. Remember though with your holliday working visa you can only work for the same employer no more than 6months and you are only permited to one of these in your life time.

Add me to msn and ill send you all the links to everything you need to know. dj_alliance_0@hotmail.com

I did a tone of research and Mebourne came out on top. Taking into account; weather changes, pollution, population growth, employability, renting and buying a property etc.

Guday mite -- "Good day mate" a way we greet in the working class in Ausie ( Austalia ) I'v been here for a long long time. Have lived in Melbourne from the age of 16 to 21.
Djalliance's research must have been a little one eyed I allways remember having to go to work ready for any contingent like a rain coat woolen jumper or thongs shirt and shorts only place that I know of that you can get all seasons in one day. Is a nice city, has no surf beaches or reefs can have temp of over 100 degrees in the summer and can lasts all day and night especially if there are northerly winds blowing...can't eat outside in the summer cause of the millions of flys, the Yarra river there has the bottom floating on the top, Only beaches in reach of the city are at port Phillip bay and even when I lived there, I didn't think much of the rubbish on them and in the water.
Have lived and worked in many places in Australia, it's very diverse in many ways and depending on what you want to do with your life depends more on what you are aiming for in regards to work, here there are more opportunity's in different fields in different areas so the idea of a work permit is the best, but don't stay in one place... Move around, find the place you like, then do your own research while you are there.
I could tell you the best place to live, but we have to many Melbornites-New Zealanders- N S Wales-ites coming here as it is.. the population when I came here was 60 thousand.. is now a quarter of a million and growing fast. so you'll have to come and have a look around till you find it Very Happy

Good grief - you mean the population doubled in 3 minutes!

That's a pretty unattractive aspect of the Gold Coast! Twisted Evil

Margo.

Yep!... Sure is a amazing place ain't it... I came through here ( on the gold coast ) just after we migrated from England... Landed in Sydney, my old man bought a 1930 model Doge Ute ( wooden spokes ) and drove up to Cairns.. with me at 16 years of age doing most of the driving, from Brisbane up to Cairns it was mostly dirt roads and bridges- only on the big rivers, some parts there were no roads and we drove up the beaches. The gold coast comprised of cement sheet and weather board cladded guest houses and homes there were no buildings over three stories on the beach, most homes were very small over there and were mostly week enders for the Brisbane people.

These flies!!!!

Damn things in your mouth, ears, up your nose. never seen it this bad andapparently its all the fault og queensland and NSW.

The great Australian wave has returned as Melbourne buzzes with flies - and it seems there might be more of the pesky creatures this year than usual.

The common bushfly breeds in cow pats in central New South Wales, hitching a ride south to Victoria - and even Tasmania - with the northerly winds.

"But this year the problem seems to be slightly worse."

He said recent humidity in NSW had produced ideal breeding conditions for the flies, which continued to thrive after migrating south due to Melbourne's warm weather.

Melbourne is consistently rated as one of the best cities in the world. It outpolled Sydney on one occasion. And Abbotsford has a pleasant sailing club.

Solipsister.

I worked in a Dunlop tire reclaim factory at Abbotsford on the Yarra in Melbourne when I first arrived in Ausie, don't recollect there being any sailing club there, if they did they would have been very short masted to get under the bridges, But that was 0ver 50 years ago. whoever rated Melbourne as one of the best citys in the world must have rocks in their heads.
