After it became known that French president Nicolas Sarkozy supports Warsaw's idea to include veto rights in a new European Treaty, it became essential for Lech Kaczynski to make himself solid with German chancellor Angela Merkel. Just for this purpose he went to Berlin last Friday, as it was reported, to have "short lunch discussion in a friendly atmosphere". The atmosphere was friendly indeed as during the meeting Lech Kaczynski was virtually crawling to Angela Merkel beseeching her to support Poland's "blocking mechanism" of a veto at the EU summit in Lisbon on 18-19 October. In attempts to win German chancellor's support, president Kaczynski went so far that even suggested making terms with Sudet Germans and paying them compensations or restoring their property in Poland - that's something that one could hardly expect from current government of Poland, an ace in the hole of Lech Kaczynski or something. Now what was Angela Merkel's reply to Kaczynski's puling? Well, we'll see in a few days. I think that was a real tempting offer. However, this restitution will surely be burdened with no one else but Poles themselves.
