I mentioned in another thread that I always had a small level of discomfort with the word "pagan"...while it described my reverence for nature, it felt too.....I don't know..."hippyish".

You and me both.

Maybe, if i showered less, I could help put a stop to that silly word

Fair enough but I thought that in all earnesty and learning from my past past mistakes, I am pretty sure that you meant to put PAGAN. As peigan is a native american tribe. And hippy is not all that called for by and large in todays society. Hippy... Bah!

At one point in time the term pagan MAY HAVE been a word/name for a religion, but in todays society it is more of a title that covers a vast majority of religions, that dont fall under the popular religion. In america that popular religion is probably christianity

If you ask a christian, most may say that a pagan is any non christian. Heathens if you will.. Laughing

Those of us who follow 'nature religions' use the word pagan to explain our beliefs in a quick, shallow term that brings most religious dicussions to an end, or allows us a quick explination of our beliefs with out deep discussion.
To say I am pagan, simply means I am not christian, or part of any other main stream religion.
But in the 'pagan community' the term pagan is not a religious belief at all.

I take too many showers to be a hippy.

Giving it a lot of thought, for me, I'm more comfortable calling myself a "deist"

Pagan is very old word and nothing to be discomforted about.. it simply refers to the religions that have pantheons of Gods and Goddesses versus a single God ..thus includes pretty much everything thats not Muslim or Judeo-Christian

Well, I don't have a pantheon of Gods and Goddesses....so Deist is a more appropriate term for me.

Nah-shouldn't be a religion. I mean, sure, take the set of Pagan beliefs against Christianity, Judaism, Islam, or Buddhism and it might be sexier and seem more beneficent-but if you think that's the point of religion you must've been raised Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or Buddhist. Christianity and Islam make for some ass-kicking fanatics. Judaism fosters tenacious, tight knit communities-and Buddhism fosters practicality and excellence at one thing or another. Believe your Donge Neon-driving self and your litter-box-crapping house cat to be gods or nature-spirits and all you're doing is deluding yourself for no practical advantage.

In the classical sense I see what college kids think they're mimicking as just a low-octane attempt at reasoning-so I'd hesitate to group it with anything following the reign of Constantine.

Dodge-but you get my drift? It's not that religion with more decadence and less functionality is worse that regular religion-it stands to reason, but I'm not concerned about it-it's the idea that if you think your a special and you're driving a Dodge Neon then you're screwed. That is to say-one assumes one has purpose-but having purpose isn't a state in itself-you have to be the kind of person that has purpose, do the kind of things that a person with purpose does and so forth. Modern Pagans have it backwards-mundane serving transcendent.

yes it is, it is a gathering of similar thoughts, ideals and believes. there is no room for deviance in the belief system, thus, deeming it a religion. Or as I prefer to call (them), a cult(s).

You know - the fact that you all fill your houses up with eggs & rabbits at Easter, drag a tree into your house for Xmas and carve pumpkins into skulls for Halloween is proof that paganism is very much alive and probably more 'real' to the majority of USA than mainstream 'religion'.

Sorry mate, one of us has the wrong end of the stick here. I did check that we are discussing 'paganism' (not the Peigans, whom I must assume are a wonderful group of people).

I am always interested in the topic when applied to whites, as my ancestors where the last Europeans to submit to Christianity. And they didn't submit quietly - the latter half of the 10th Century was replete with the cheerful slaughter of Christians and the accompanying cry "Where's your God now??". Followed by the sullen acceptance of the Church and the 'adoption' of pagan ways to sweeten the deal.

@Francis,
Quote:
Twice during the eleventh century there occurred heavy relapses into paganism; in 1045, under King Andreas, and in 1060, under King Bela

And some Christians found themselves a head shorter we hope......
