Power and the Glory... haven't read that in years.

Am reading Devil in the White City, very ploddingly. I will finish it. It's non-fiction, covers the building of the Columbia Exposition World's Fair in Chicago, at the same time there was a serial killer right nearby...

I just finished a book on tape, Einstein: His Life and Universe by Walter Isaacson. It was quite enjoyable.

The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai.

Have been looking forward to this one for a while! Very impressive beginning (on chapter 7).

I'm about halfway done with this book -- I'm enjoying it too.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madelaine L'engle to my kids

We read that when I was in fifth grade. The teacher got a small group of kids in a circle and we all took turns reading a page. Then the teacher would finish off the chapter so we could relax and listen. It's a fantastic book. Smile

Jeremy Young's The Violence of God and the War on Terror. Young is an Anglican priest who is also a family therapist, and he writes convincingly of the abusive nature of the God of the Jews, the Bible, the New Testament and Geo. W. Bush. He particularly points out how GWB has dumped his drinking problem onto God, and not dealt with it in a mature and self-analytical way, in fact is immune to self analysis and self criticism, genuinely seeming surprised that he epitomises evil for other bigots around the world. A good and interesting book, whatever your faith; he's an honest writer.

Just finished reading (in a day & a bit!) Douglas Kennedy's The Woman in the Fifth. The strange & increasingly stranger saga of an American academic who has "lost everything" (big time!) & flees home (& scandal) to live in poverty Paris. Down & out & getting into some very sticky situations! A pretty good read! Enjoyed it.

Monkey - Wu Ch'eng-En translated by Arthur Waley

it's an abridged translation of Journey to the West, a Ming dynasty novel. the monkey aka the "Great Sage, Equal of Heaven" is a delightful character. i may have to read all 4 volumes/100 chapters of the complete novel some time. Shocked

Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three ~ Mara Leveritt

book by a newspaper reporter about a case that was documented in 2 HBO movies. have only seen clips of the films, but book reinforces the impression i had from the outset that there was insufficient evidence to convict the defendants, let alone the death penalty for one of the three.

"collecting himself - james thurber on writing and writing , humour and himself" , edited by michael rosen , the literary director of thurber house in columbus , ohio .
woderfully sharp and short stories poking fun at just about anything and anyone - sometimes using a rather sharply pointed stick !
his illustrations are great - as usual .
(one of the many christmas book presents from ebeth - unfortunately i never have enough books , even though i don't know where to store them all).

Thurbers the best. is "File and Forget" one of the stories? Its written as a series of increasingly strident letters between Thurber and a publisher.

farmerman :
haven't found "file and forget" among the about 50 entries yet .
just read last night while already in bed :
"the theory and practice of citicizing the criticism of the editing of new yorker articles " . it includes this little gem : see calvin coolidge's "the man who does not pray is not a praying man" !
SMILES !
