Just started The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. It is a political/philosophical/cultural analysis of what we eat and why.
Just started Terrorist by John Updike at dlowan's suggestion. Have only read the first 30-odd pages so far but it's quite fascinating...so far.

That's on my list too. Please let us know what you think when you've read a bit more.
I've just started reading "Guitar For Dummies" It makes buying the instrument worthwhile. Now it's time to get back to practicing the riff from Iron Maiden's -------------- "Smoke On The Water"
About to launch into reading for my class. Choice ends for me for a time.
from Powell's
Quote:Mrs. Ted Bliss tells the story of an eighty-two-year-old widow starting life anew after the death of her husband. As Dorothy Bliss learns to cope with the mundane rituals of life in a Florida retirement community, she inadvertently becomes involved with a drug kingpin trying to use her as a front for his operations. Combining a comic plot with a deep concern for character, Elkin ends his career with a vivid portrait of a woman overcoming loss, a woman who is both recognizable and as unique as Elkin's other famous characters.
Truly great character work.

Fluke
Or, I know Why the Winged Whale Sings
By Christopher Moore
Light, snorting good fun. This author has a great way of rendering accents and eccentricities.
Fire Sale by Sara Paretsky.
A little too glib...or something.
Finished Hotel Honolulu. Satisfying read, if you like Theroux.
Just finished "Cell" Stephen King, and "Money Secrets" By DAve Barry
Cell is about the zombification of America by a sudden malevolent pulse in cell phones and the resultant post apocalyptic world where the zombies and the "norms" dont get along. Cute but, so derivative of every last 25 Stephen King books that Im glad its a library book
Money Secrets-Is a book of money and investment tips from David Barry. Who, makes about as much sense as many investment gurus who want you to actually believe what they say. For the Germans on the line, Dave bArry is a "Humorist"
Farmerman, it is a little irritating to have to constantly explain things to the Germans.
Why can't they figure this crap out on their own?
I happen to know Dave Berry
What BOOK are you reading right now?
Yellow rivers By I.P. Freely
I'm re-reading short stories by Ephraim Kishon.
Reading Jean-Paul Sartre: A life by Annie Cohen-Solal. Always thought he was a fascinating character but only knew snippets about him before!

Really!?!?
I'm reading "Deculturalization and the struggle for equality: A brief history of the education of dominated cultures in the United States" and "Multicultural education". Having been an anthro major in college, this is much more to my liking than the literacy texts (though the later were appreciated).
still working away at "boswell - the life of samuel johnson" .
made it to page 220 - only another 750 to go .
i usually read about 10 pages at bedtime , so only another 75 days

.

Started Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses.
So far so good. His writing takes a little getting used to. I think he's a master of language and he has no interest in clear as a bell sentences.
