ALL religions I know of state God is both Loving and Just.
Neither of these qualities fit with Endless Torture...
Does your God have a Sadistic side?
(Sadistic="delight in cruelty")
i think it's pretty obvious that hell (read: "that particular hell") wouldn't have made it into the bible if the council of nicea had met while jesus was still around.
the old testament talks about hell using the words sheol and gehinnom. one is a kind of perfect self-awareness... heaven for those that lead noble lives and hell for the wicked.
the other one i'm not familiar with, but i'd actually guess it's a sort of destruction point- ceasing to exist for those that can't stand themselves, and ego obliteration for those that fold back into god, similar to nirvana. my own take on the "nothingness" of nirvana might seem unique to most western buddhists, but i've heard some interesting theories that are close to my own.
i don't sweat the afterlife, i'm looking for everything divine but i'm here with the sinners. i come from a long line of them, these are people i care about, i intend to go where they go.
i think you can connect hell with heaven and redeem it, and if there's an afterlife, this life is practice for it, but i *don't* think god forces anything on anyone. not even punishment. conventional hell is just a poem about mystical knowledge, it's been poorly rewritten over and over into the bigoted, fearmongering spew you hear today.
I'm an atheist, so obviously not.
However, I'd like to point out something interesting that I found. Apparently, there's a correlation between dualistic belief (i.e. belief in God and the Devil) and crime. Very interesting. Could one be causing the other? Who knows?
(it's in his sig)

would seem to answer that perfectly. just replace "socioeconomic status" with "religious belief." thanks to ci for making the job easy.
also, librarians are hot. always were, always will be.
